Sonora, CA – The CHP and Sonora Police Department will be out in force to help ring in the New Year safely.
The CHP’s maximum enforcement period (MEP) for the New Year’s holiday begins tonight at 6:01 p.m. and ends at midnight on New Year’s Day, with increased patrols focused on DUI, speeding, and distracted driving. The CHP reminds everyone to make safety part of the plan:
Drive Sober: Never get behind the wheel impaired. Plan ahead, designate a sober driver, or use a rideshare or public transportation. Slow Down: Speeding puts lives at risk. Give yourself extra time and drive responsibly. Stay Focused: Distracted driving can be deadly. Put the phone away and keep your attention on the road. Buckle Up: Seat belts save lives—every seat, every trip. Share the Road: Stay alert for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists, especially during nighttime celebrations.Sonora Police will also have additional officers patrolling the city streets through New Year’s Day. They noted that it is part of a “special enforcement effort targeting drunk and distracted drivers to keep our community safe during the celebrations.”
The SPD and CHP urge the public to call 911 to report suspected intoxicated drivers. Callers should note details about the vehicle’s description, license plate number, and direction of travel.
“As we welcome 2026, let’s look out for one another and make it home safely. Happy New Year and safe travels from the California Highway Patrol!”
