An allegedly reckless driver who was chasing after his girlfriend in his speeding car veered off the roadway December 23 and mowed down a 43-year-old single mother of four as she stood outside her Houston, Texas, home, authorities have confirmed in a statement.
It was at approximately 4:30 p.m. when police allege a 34-year-old man pursuing his girlfriend’s speedy Toyota sedan lost control of his own car and slammed into Xochitl Santos, who was found by first responders unresponsive in her driveway, pinned beneath the man’s vehicle.
Police have not identified the man as he has not been charged with any crimes connected to Santos’ death, which officials have ruled an accident. The driver was detained by authorities but later released.
Investigators have learned the couple involved in the fatal crash had been arguing blocks away in their apartment complex’s parking lot. Cops allegedly have surveillance footage from an apartment building showing the woman driving away in her car. The man emerged moments later and followed after her in his Chevy Cobalt.
Santos, who was not initially identified by police, was taken to the hospital where doctors amputated one of her legs. But it was all too much for the mom’s battered body, according to Harris County medical examiners, who released the mom’s name. Santos, who worked as a house cleaner, died soon after the amputation, police said.
Investigators have alleged the unnamed driver ran through a stop sign, somehow causing him to lose control of the car. It was unclear Wednesday, December 31, if the man would be cited for failing to stop.
ABC 11 first reported that the man was following after his girlfriend.
Houston Police were unavailable for comment Wednesday morning.
Man Accused of Killing Mother of His Children, Leaving Her Body in Trash Can
An effort has been launched online to raise money for the four children left motherless by the tragedy.
“She was a single mom, but you would never know that unless you really listened,” wrote Janella Cordray Armstrong in an online tribute to Santos. “That did not define her. She was hardworking, loyal, trustworthy and the kindest soul on the planet. She wasn’t the help. She was my friend.”
Armstrong shared her last memory of Santos: the slain mom meowed at her cat. “She loved our pups, our kitties and our family as her own,” she added, noting her children plan to expand her cleaning business. “She raised amazing kids who are just as strong as she is.”
It was unclear at press time how much money the effort had already raised. “They would never ask for help, but I’d like to send them some funds to get them through these next few days while they plan out her funeral and where they will go to live,” Armstrong continued writing. “No children should ever be faced with the stress of finances or any of this. If you can help get them through the holidays, I know they will appreciate it and use it wisely. They haven’t asked, but we all know everything helps.”
Armstrong’s post does not provide ages for Santos’ four children.
