Oklahoma quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. plans to leave the program.
On Wednesday, Hawkins revealed to ESPN’s Pete Thamel that he intends to enter the transfer portal when it opens on Jan. 2. Hawkins started multiple times in 2024 when Oklahoma benched Jackson Arnold, but he backed up John Mateer when healthy throughout the 2025 campaign.
Hawkins, a sophomore, will have 3 seasons of eligibility remaining after appearing in just 2 games this season.
The Dallas native signed with OU out of the 2024 class. He was a 4-star recruit in the industry-generated 247 Composite, holding offers from Alabama, Michigan, Mizzou, and Penn State, among others.
Hawkins appeared in 7 games as a true freshman, starting 4 times. He completed 63% of his passes for 783 yards and 3 touchdowns with 2 interceptions. He also ran 69 times for 204 yards and another score.
This season, Hawkins attempted just 27 passes. He converted 15 of them for 167 yards with 3 scores and no picks. He also added another rushing score on the ground.
Most of Hawkins’s work came on Oct. 4 against Kent State, when he drew a spot start after Mateer broke a bone in his hand. In the Sooners’ 44-0 win over the Golden Flashes, Hawkins went 14-for-24 for 162 yards and 3 scores while rushing 9 times for 54 yards.
Mateer returned the following week and went right back into the starting lineup. Oklahoma lost to Texas and Ole Miss in 2 of Mateer’s first 3 games back from injury. Some within the fanbase called for Hawkins to re-enter the lineup, but the Sooners stuck with Mateer and earned a College Football Playoff berth.
In the 34-24 first-round loss to Alabama, Mateer completed 26 of his 41 passes for 307 yards and 2 scores. He had a rushing touchdown, but he also threw a pick-6 in the closing minutes of the first half that erased what was, at one point, a 17-point lead.
According to Thamel, Hawkins’s brother, Maliek, a defensive back, also plans to enter the transfer portal. The brothers intend to transfer to the same school.
