Although the headquarters for Tonya’s Café & Bakeshop is still undergoing repairs, the celebrated baker is not letting the holiday season go by without offering some of her customers’ favorite items.
Tonya Council’s business announced on Wednesday it will open a pop-up shop for its bakery and North Carolina-based gifts shop in the 900 Willow building. Located on the edge of University Place in Chapel Hill, the building has several retail spaces available for start-up businesses — which have also been used by businesses that needed a temporary re-location, like Tonya’s. A release from the bakeshop said it will open in mid-November at 900 Willow, operating at six days a week while offering Take & Bake orders, Council’s signature pecan crisp cookies and other holiday desserts.
The space will also serve as a pick-up location for Thanksgiving meal orders, a staple of Mama Dip’s Kitchen — which belonged to Tonya’s grandmother, Mildred Council — and now Tonya’s Café. Despite losing its main kitchen to a fire in September, the business will still offer patrons full Thanksgiving meals, à la carte sides and pies that can be picked up on November 24 and 25. Tonya’s Café & Bakeshop is also offering catering for holiday events amid the fire recovery as well.
The fire at 400 South Elliott Road on September 19 appears to have started from inside the small business, with smoke and water damage forcing the café to close the space for renovations. The Council family quickly launched a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money for the Tonya’s staff and repairs, with the effort recently surpassing $52,000 from 321 donations.
“The support we’ve received from this community since the fire has meant so much to me and my team,” says Council. “Keeping my staff working is important as we rebuild. Being able to get back in the kitchen, fill holiday orders and welcome customers again gives us a way to keep moving forward together.”

Additionally, Tonya’s mother Spring Council wrote on the GoFundMe page the campaign’s goal has been adjusted to aim for $100,000, which would further speed up the restoration process at the Galleria shopping center space.
“Insurance simply will not cover the full cost of replacing all the commercial kitchen equipment,” wrote Spring Council. “This bridges the gap so Tonya can replace ruined baking ovens, mixers, refrigeration, and prep tables, as well as handle specialized smoke cleanup so work doesn’t stall.”
Once open at 900 Willow, Tonya’s Bakeshop & Gifts will have operating hours of Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Online orders for pick-up at the space can be placed on the bakeshop’s website.
