Well… that was fun.
Yes, the final score still stings, but not in the same way it used to. Not anymore. And I think — at least for me — that shift is rooted in something the Bears haven’t had in a very long time: trust. Trust that Caleb Williams can flip the script the next time he gets the ball with the game on the line.
Ben Johnson has been pretty clear about where his second-year quarterback is in the developmental arc. The “operational” phase is over. The foundation is set. Now comes the fun part — layering concepts, expanding the playbook, pushing the ball downfield, and letting Williams work with real autonomy. On Sunday night, that philosophy showed up loud and clear.
Against a 49ers team with equal offensive firepower — and a secondary hovering in the middle-to-lower tier of the league in efficiency — Johnson knew the air was the path of least resistance. And after months of tuning, tweaking, and reinforcing the engine, he finally took it out for a true test drive.
The results? Encouraging, to say the least.
Sergio Estrada-Imagn ImagesWilliams completed 25 of 42 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns, both coming on deep strikes. The 25 completions were his most since the October loss to Baltimore and tied his season high. The 42 attempts marked a season high outright — a clear signal of growing confidence from the coaching staff and growing command from the quarterback himself.
Zooming out, the trend is even more telling. Williams has topped 200 passing yards in three straight games and in four of his last six. Over the last three weeks — two of them against elite defenses — he’s thrown for 822 yards, six touchdowns, and zero interceptions. That’s not just growth. That’s momentum.
Now, with Detroit looming in Week 18 and history within reach, Williams has a chance to put a definitive stamp on his sophomore season. But before looking ahead, let’s rewind and appreciate some of his best work from Sunday night against the 49ers.
The Best of Caleb Williams in Week 17
Let’s start with the touchdown throw to Luther Burden III in the first quarter:
Caleb Williams' TD to Luther Burden III: – A++ Anticipation and placement. – Throwing with the left arm pinned and off the front foot. Arm talent is ELITE. pic.twitter.com/7zGKDVD2IV
— Patrick K. Flowers (@PatrickKFlowers) December 29, 2025This was really the start of the flow for the Bears’ passing game on Sunday night, and it was an elite throw by Williams. From the timing, to throwing off the front foot with the left arm pinned due to the pocket collapsing, to the anticipation and placement of the throw. It was elite across the board, and the arm talent never fails to impress.
How many times have Bears fans seen this happen against them?
Lmao at Theo Benedet out there throwing up the arm like he's a WR. pic.twitter.com/003exueWmV
— Patrick K. Flowers (@PatrickKFlowers) December 29, 2025The quarterback recognizes the offsides, gets it snapped, knowing he’s going to have a free shot downfield, and throws a dot for six points. This feels like the Aaron Rodgers special that Bears fans have watched on replay for years as a form of cruel and unusual punishment.
Also, the All-22 version had me cackling this morning, watching Theo Benedet throwing his arm up like a wide receiver. But seriously, even with the free play element considered, Williams uncorks a 47-yard bullet right into the hands of Colston Loveland, and it was a thing of beauty.
Here’s a third-quarter scramble drill to extend a drive, a bullet to Burden for the first down, and then some.

— Patrick K. Flowers (@PatrickKFlowers) December 29, 2025More goodness … an absolute laser from Williams on the go-ahead drive in the fourth quarter. Pure cinema.
