It was more of the same from the Phoenix Suns on Monday, a win over an inferior opponent in not the most convincing of fashions, a 115-101 final over the Washington Wizards.
Phoenix has now won four straight and five of its last six.
Following a back-to-back in New Orleans that featured plenty of sloppy Suns (19-13) play and blank patches of effort and engagement, the Wizards (7-24) matchup shared that theme, along with Phoenix making up for it by continuing maniacal offensive glass work.
Second-chance points were 23-0 Suns at the half and ended at 26-10, playing a large part in them taking 23 more shot attempts. For all of the areas where there have been more gaps in execution for the Suns over the last month, the work crashing the glass has not broken stride at all.

Phoenix shot 30% in the first quarter and the scoring duo of Devin Booker and Dillon Brooks had combined to shoot 8-for-24 at the half. But the extra opportunities and putbacks were enough to keep the Suns in the game despite fairly lackadaisical defense. They trailed for portions of the first half before leading by seven at halftime, and at one point got their lead to 15.
But even with Washington on the second game of a back-to-back, the Suns just aren’t executing well enough over multiple segments to put a game like this away earlier than they should have. However you want to feel about that, whether it’s more picky or something to actually be concerned about, is up to you!
An Oso Ighodaro floater and Booker step-back deep two-pointer capped off a 9-2 run across three minutes of the mid-fourth quarter to buff the lead from six to 13 with 2:42 to go. That was all.
Like Saturday’s victory, the Suns were fortunate to have some strong 3-point shooting lift the offense beyond just offensive rebounding. They actually shot about the same from deep (17-for-40, 43%) as they did from the field (41-for-101, 41%).
Collin Gillespie had five of those 3-point makes for 25 points and O’Neale added five triples of his own for 15, as Phoenix just keeps finding guys to step up on offense despite how shorthanded it is on talent right now. On that note, Jordan Goodwin scored 14 points with seven rebounds and two steals.
Gillespie in particular is playing his best basketball of the season after a brief shooting slump at the start the month indicated some regression could be coming and that a role of 30-plus minutes was too large for him.
Instead, he’s scored 15-plus points in six straight games, an impressive bit of consistency we aren’t used to seeing from Booker’s supporting cast. Gillespie joins Booker, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Mikal Bridges and Brooks as the only Suns players to achieve that type of streak in the last five seasons, per Stathead.
Booker provided 22 points (8 of 23) and Brooks netted a game-high 26 (8-for-20).
Phoenix’s lack of intensity defensively allowed some of Washington’s young skilled scorers to get comfortable, namely rookie Tre Johnson, who scored a career-high 24 points.
Without Mark Williams (suspension), Oso Ighodaro had another solid performance with six points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals in 30 minutes.
The Suns were without Grayson Allen (right knee injury management), Ryan Dunn (right knee soreness) and Jalen Green (right hamstring strain). Washington was down Kyshawn George (left hip flexor strain), Corey Kispert (left hamstring strain), Khris Middleton (right knee injury management) and Cam Whitmore (right shoulder deep vein thrombosis).
