It’s that calm, in-between stretch after Christmas and before the new year, when the pace softens and the pressure lifts. Around San Diego County the weekend leans into easygoing fun – a little culture, a little play and just enough sparkle to keep the holiday spirit alive – weather permitting!

Step into a world of whimsy as Steve Taylor’s “Magical Marionettes Show” takes the stage at the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater in Balboa Park for a three-day run. The family comedy star, seen on America’s Got Talent, enchants audiences with puppetry, magic, ventriloquism and the debut of his newest creation, “Sammy the Snappy Snake Charmer.” Shows are Friday at 2 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday performances at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $7 for seniors and military.

Balboa Park’s WorldBeat Cultural Center hosts its 45th annual free, family-friendly Kwanzaa Celebration Friday through Monday, honoring four of the seven days of the African American holiday. Doors open nightly at 6 p.m., programs start at 6:30 p.m. and each night includes candle lighting, libations, drumming, poetry, speakers and a traditional feast. This year also introduces the Kwanzaa Awards, recognizing community leaders who embody the holiday’s values, including unity, purpose and creativity. RSVP here.

It’s the last weekend to make the USS Midway’s Jingle Jets Holiday Lighting Celebration part of your holiday tradition. The museum’s flight deck is sparkling with over a million lights, festive performances and new attractions such as the Holiday Dancing Light Show, expanded Reindeer Games and a penguin scavenger hunt. Tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for kids 4-12 and free for children 3 and under, plus discounts for Midway members. The celebration runs on select nights through Dec. 30 from 5:30-9 p.m.

Stop by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla, where “A Decade of Pop Prints and Multiples, 1962-1972: The Frank Mitzel Collection” widens the eyes. From Campbell’s soup cans to Phillips 66 signs, this colorful collection of more than 60 prints brings mid-century Pop Art to life for the first time, thanks to collector Frank Mitzel. Catch it Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., or Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets start at $15 for locals and students, $25 general and entry is free for visitors 25 and under, military or SNAP/EBT cardholders.

Headed to Petco Park for the Wild Horses Music Festival Saturday? To help fans travel smoothly, the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is rolling out enhanced trolley service before and after the show. The festival is headlined by Grammy-winning Mumford & Sons and features a strong Americana, country and modern folk lineup including Lord Huron, Sierra Ferrell and Lily Meola. Doors open at 4 p.m. and tickets start at about $55.

If you haven’t laced up yet, now’s the time because San Diego’s outdoor ice rinks are about to pack it in. Liberty Station’s Rady Children’s Hospital rink and Hotel del Coronado’s famous Skating by the Sea both wrap up Jan. 4, while Viejas Outlet Center Ice Rink in Alpine keeps skating open through Jan. 11. Admission fees vary, and each rink donates a portion of proceeds to causes such as Make-A-Wish® San Diego.

Prefer to watch the action rather than take to the ice? The San Diego Gulls face the Abbotsford Canucks Sunday at 5 p.m. at Pechanga Arena in the Midway District, with tickets starting around $25.

The San Diego Clippers also host the Sioux Falls Skyforce at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside this weekend, tipping off Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 6 p.m. Saturday is Kids Night, with the first 500 kids receiving a mascot shoulder pet, while Sunday’s Country Night offers themed music and cowboy hats for the first 1,000 fans. Tickets start at $15.
