Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times wrote a really good piece on Friday after a lengthy conversation with Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson. The focus of this story was the Blackhawks’ goaltending situation.
Davidson told Pope they’re still committed to Arvid Söderblom as the NHL back-up. “There’s no real discussion at this point to making any change. We just have to be a little more consistent in front of him.” But behind Spencer Knight and Söderblom is a mess right now.
Since Laurent Brossoit has come back from his lengthy stay on IR, the Blackhawks have five goaltenders who need ice time. Right now, Brossoit is taking ice time away from Drew Commesso and AHL rookie Stanislav Berezhnoy. It sounds like Berezhnoy could get some run in Indianapolis in the ECHL after Christmas until the Blackhawks resolve the Brossoit situation. Here’s what Davidson told Pope about the veteran Brossoit looking for an NHL gig:
“He understands he needs to continue to play and show that he’s durable — we believe there’s no issues there,” Davidson said. “Then there’s got to be an [NHL] opportunity. And there’s also things like the money aspect — that has to fit. There’s a bunch of different factors that go into this.
“He’s been a true pro, great guy and great teammate, both in Rockford and in Chicago. We’ve tried to be reciprocal with that respect and keep him up to date with everything. … [He’s] depth for us until something comes up that makes sense outside of the organization.”
The Blackhawks' goalie depth chart beneath Spencer Knight is getting complicated.Soderblom has struggled recently. Brossoit is stuck, for now. Commesso and Berezhnoy need to play.So I asked Kyle Davidson where things stand. New story: t.co/WWJBp6bPzb
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) December 19, 2025 With that in mind, the NHL’s holiday roster freeze went into effect last night at 11:59 PM (local time). The roster freeze runs through 12:01 AM (local time) on Dec. 28, with respect to waivers, trades and loans. There are exceptions allowed within the CBA (emergency recalls, for example). But trading won’t happen. Brossoit — or anyone else for that matter — cannot be traded until after Christmas at this point. Two trades went down before the roster freeze went into effect. And they included notable players going to interesting new homes. Well, not necessarily a “new” home in the first trade. That saw the Montreal Canadiens send a second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft to the Los Angeles Kings for center Phillip Danault. I’m honestly a little surprised Danault, who has one more year with a $5.5M cap hit and is struggling this season, brought that much in return. Danault, who will turn 33 at the end of February, spend six years with the Habs before joining the Kings. The Canadiens have acquired forward Phillip Danault from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a 2026 second-round pick. — Canadiens Montréal (@CanadiensMTL) December 20, 2025 The other trade saw the Seattle Kraken send veteran forward Mason Marchment to Columbus for a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in 2027. This deal also surprised me. Marchment, 30, is in the final year of a contract that has a $4.5M cap hit. He has four goals and nine assists in 29 games to start his first season in Seattle. And the Kraken gave up less to get him from Dallas this past summer — a fourth-round pick in 2025 and a third-round pick in 2026 — before a tough start to the year than Columbus did now. Nice win for the Kraken here. Solid veteran heading to Columbus, which is a nice get for the Blue Jackets as well.? — Seattle Kraken (@SeattleKraken) December 20, 2025 Yesterday I wrote up some potential line changes the Blackhawks might consider to generate more offense in Ottawa this afternoon. Ben Pope tweeted some lines form the Blackhawks’ practice in Montreal later yesterday… and the lines are close what I proposed. We’ll see if a) that’s what the Hawks go with this afternoon, and b) if it works. A quick reminder: there are no games on the schedule in the OHL after tonight until Dec. 28. Last night’s games were the last for the WHL until Dec. 27. The Blackhawks/NHL are closed for business Dec. 24-26. The Mutt is going to make an appearance in January, and it’s to support a very personal cause. Andrew Shaw’s brother, Doug, was diagnosed with ALS in 2022. Andrew has set up a public autograph and photograph experience at Sports N More in Lombard on Jan. 18th, 2026, with all proceeds helping Doug Shaw’s medical expenses. — Hockey News Hub (@HockeyNewsHub) December 19, 2025 The Dallas Stars announced Tyler Seguin had surgery to repair a torn ACL on Dec. 16. He will be re-evaluated after the Olympic break. I would keep an eye on them looking to potentially use that cap space to bolster their chances in the postseason. Colorado isn’t going away and Minnesota is now all-in. Finally, Mike G. Morreale at NHL.com put together a nice list of 2026 draft-eligible names to watch at the upcoming World Junior Championship. With the Blackhawks having two first-round picks this coming summer, plenty to consider. The 2026 World Junior Championship begins December 26 with full coverage on NHL Network!Read all about which players to look out for at this year's tournament ⤵️ t.co/C0H5JcXx42
