Chicago’s preseason opener against the Browns last weekend was largely void of starters, which opened up extended playing time for Bears looking to win a roster spot and carve out a role before the regular season arrives.
One of those names is Jamree Kromah. Aside from a brief stop in New England (on the practice squad), Kromah has been with the Bears in some capacity or another since he signed with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2024.
He was all over the field on Saturday, with the highlight of the afternoon a strip sack and fumble recovery on Cleveland quarterback Deshaun Watson. That takeaway set the Bears up for their first score of the afternoon, which came four plays later, and sparked a 34-10 rout.
Kromah transformed his frame in the offseason, losing 20 pounds, and the difference was immediately noticeable on Saturday.
Jamree Kromah Turned Heads Against Cleveland
On Wednesday, Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen was asked about Kromah’s development and what he’s seen from him throughout camp.
“I think he’s really taken to the coaching and the way that we’re trying to teach, which is a little bit different than what we were doing last year. We’re trying to be a little bit more attacking, a little bit more aggressive, attack the line of scrimmage a little bit more, and so there’s some key coaching points in being able to do that. And I think he’s one of the guys that has really just stuck with it and really tried to focus on doing those things exactly how we’re coaching it.
“And him, along with a few others, when you see it, and they see the results of when you do it exactly right, you have success – so therefore success breeds success. I’ve been really impressed with what I’ve seen, and hopefully, throughout the course of these joint practices, we’ll get a little bit more of a look at him, maybe even working with the ones, and see, you know, as you start to increase the level of competition, what does it look like? Does it look the same? So excited to see that.”
Kromah turned heads on Saturday, but he’s been impressing his defensive coordinator throughout camp. Allen is looking forward to seeing how he performs in the joint practice this week, and will likely get plenty of opportunity in the preseason contest with Cincinnati on Saturday.

Nevertheless, his development is promising, and he’ll provide the Bears with some intriguing depth in the meantime if injuries become an issue at that spot throughout the season.
Speaking of new names in the defensive line, Chicago added veteran defensive end Marcus Davenport this week.
Dennis Allen Points to ‘hidden production’ In Bears’ New Pass Rusher
Davenport played eight games for the Lions last season and registered one sack and three quarterback hits, with the lone sack coming against Caleb Williams and the Bears in Week 2. After logging 10.5 sacks in his first two seasons with the Saints, he’s logged just four sacks in 29 games over the last four seasons.
Davenport was drafted by the Saints when Dennis Allen was there, so there’s a familiarity there.
“We drafted him in New Orleans. He’s always been a disruptive player. You can put on a lot of tape and see him in the backfield creating a lot of disruption.”

Mandatory Credit: Matt Marton-USA TODAY SportsDavenport’s lack of sacks in recent seasons is what immediately jumps out at you, but Allen insisted on Wednesday that there’s production beyond the box score that he brings to the table for the Bears defense.
“Everybody talks about production. There’s a lot of hidden production in that he creates a lot of opportunities for other people. He understands our mentality and mindset for how we want to play defense, and I think he’s a good fit. Obviously, the biggest thing for Marcus, and it’s been that way throughout his career, is his ability to be healthy and maintain his health. But when he’s out there, he’s a disruptive force.”
Love the sack numbers or not, it sounds like Allen sees enough in Davenport for him to carve out a role on that Bears defensive line. It’s a unit that can use as much help as possible when it comes to getting the pass rush going, so let’s see how it looks as Davenport gets integrated. Allen said on Wednesday that the pass rush, while improved, still has work to do.
“I think the pass rush has been better, and it still needs to improve. We’ll have a great opportunity this week against Cincinnati, both in the joint practices and in the game. But I think the pass rush has improved, and I think it will continue to improve.”
