Bulls Front Office is Ambivalent About Coby White’s 2026 Free Agency ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Chicago Bulls’ front office, led by team president Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley, is reportedly uncertain about committing significant money to Coby White next summer.

Per Julia Poe of The Chicago Tribune, “there’s internal uncertainty about whether the Bulls can or will” re-sign the 6-foot-5 North Carolina product over the offseason, when he’ll be an unrestricted free agent. The 25-year-old is currently on an expiring $12.9 million deal.

Ahead of the season, Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer suggested that White and his reps were looking for a new contract with an annual price tag around $30 million. How close he gets to that number may hinge on how the rest of free agency shakes out, but it’s at least worth something in the range of backcourt mate Josh Giddey’s splashy new four-year, $100 million agreement earned late in his restricted free agency.

Poe suggests that Giddey appears to be the Bulls’ priority between the two players.

White sat out for all of Chicago’s exciting 6-1 season start with a calf injury, and the fit between him and Giddey has looked shaky during the minutes they’ve been able to share. Poe notes that White’s long range sniping (for his career, made 36.7 percent of 6.3 triple tries a night, although he’s shooting just 29.2 percent from distance this year) and his abilities to score and create with the ball may be enough to convince a contender he’ll thrive with a hierarchical demotion on a good team.

Through 10 healthy games this season, White has been averaging 22.0 points on .445/.292/.813 shooting splits, 4.8 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 0.8 steals per. He’ll likely improve that 3-point conversion rate soon, having never made worse than 35.4 percent of his treys throughout his six completed pro seasons.

Poe urges Chicago to make a White trade “Priority No. 1” in the lead-up to this year’s trade deadline.

Optimal Coby White Trade Destinations

Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times reported last week that the Minnesota Timberwolves had asked about the potential of a White trade. That makes sense. 38-year-old former All-Star Mike Conley has slipped significantly and has been demoted to a reserve role, but new full-time starting point guard Donte DiVincenzo is clearly more comfortable off the ball and doesn’t have the kind of handle you’d want out of a starter.

Rob Dillingham is being outplayed by Bones Hyland, and neither is an ideal fit. Minnesota could use another playmaker, but the team would need to give Chicago some significant draft capital in an exchange.

White could also be a fascinating sixth-man bench fit on a contender like the Detroit Pistons or the Denver Nuggets, but again, both those clubs need to respect the addition with the appropriate return package of draft picks.

The flailing Milwaukee Bucks could use a major backcourt scoring boost beyond just Ryan Rollins. Milwaukee may be more interested in, say, Ayo Dosunmu’s defense than Coby White’s stellar scoring and shooting, but White could bring a lot of the playmaking the Bucks lost when they ditched Damian Lillard.

An Uncertain Future For Much of the Bulls’ Roster

How many of these underwhelming 2025-26 Chicago Bulls will even be part of the team’s roster in 2026-27?

Only point guard Josh Giddey, power forward Matas Buzelis, small forward Isaac Okoro, center/power forward Jalen Smith, off-guard Tre Jones, combo forward Patrick Williams, and rookie forward Noa Essengue are under contract. Chicago has a $2.4 million cap hold on reserve small forward Julian Phillips.

Two current Chicago starters in White and center Nikola Vucevic will be unrestricted free agents, barring (unexpected) contract extensions before the official end of the season in June.

Among the Bulls’ impending unrestricted free agents, White is obviously the most talented piece — unfortunately, that also means Chicago will face the most robust competition for his services. Hometown hero Dosunmu, a more complete two-way player if not as much of an offensive force, could probably be brought back at a reasonable number.

Bulls centers Nikola Vucevic and Zach Collins both come off the books, and Vucevic’s horrific defense is such an eyesore that it feels unlikely the Bulls will retain him. Collins, who’s netting $18.1 million this season, will be getting a significant pay cut on his next deal. He’s a better rim protector, but a constant injury question mark.
