The Bears aren’t just playing the Packers this week. They’re staring at a doorway — one that hasn’t been open often in the last 30 years — with a chance to walk through it and finally reshape the most lopsided rivalry in recent history. And the quarterback being asked to lead that shift is walking toward that moment with something that feels new around here: calm, conviction, and zero fear of the stage.
Over the last two weeks, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has spoken with the clarity of someone who has already processed his most painful NFL moment. His late interception at Lambeau has been replayed endlessly, turned into the latest chapter of Bears-Packers heartbreak. But Williams never flinched. Instead, he leaned directly into it — and doubled down on who he believes himself to be.
Tork Mason/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin“There’s not another moment, another player, another situation, in those moments, I feel like the ball should be in my hand,” he said.
The MJ and Kobe analogies weren’t bravado. They were a window into how he sees pressure, how he sees failure, and why he believes he’ll own moments like that as his career unfolds.
“I’ll take those shots, and I’ll roll with the punches if I do miss… When that moment comes up again, I think nine times out of 10 that I’ll hit.”
Those are not the words of a quarterback shaken by Green Bay. They’re the words of one plotting his next strike.
And that timing is no coincidence. Because this week isn’t just another game, it’s Soldier Field under the lights. It’s a chance to push the Packers out of the NFC North race and inch closer to a playoff berth no one saw coming in September. It’s a chance to flip a script that has loomed over the franchise for decades.
Williams’ response? Focus — the kind that suggests he understands what this opportunity represents.
“Starting faster… sharp, sharp, sharp focus,” he said, diagnosing the thing that held the Bears back in their first meeting versus Green Bay.
Jeff Hanisch-Imagn ImagesWilliams is right. Chicago looked like the better team in long stretches of that matchup, but it spotted the Packers early momentum. Now, Williams is locked in on changing that. “Sometimes just seeing the first basket go in… finding that first completion.”
The Bears know what he looks like once that happens. The question is whether they can get him there sooner — and that’s where the Williams–Ben Johnson partnership becomes central. Williams talked openly about the trust they’ve built, the shared language that continues to evolve, and the playoff mindset that was part of Johnson’s pitch from day one.
“The playoff mentality, the championship mentality… that’s where we want to be,” Williams said. “Managing those expectations… that’s going to take experience, trusting in him, trusting the process.”
If that sounds like a franchise quarterback, that’s because it is.
This week will test all of it — the trust, the confidence, the poise, the urgency. Green Bay is still Green Bay, even without the old villains roaming the other sideline. They disguise, they bait, they jump routes, they feast on hesitation. Williams knows this. He’s lived it. And he’s not running from it.
Wm. Glasheen USA TODAY NETWORK-WisconsinThe interception in Week 14 isn’t hanging over him. It’s fueling him.
And here’s the truth: If Chicago wants to change the tenor of this rivalry, it starts with exactly this kind of game — a primetime rematch with real stakes, with both fanbases locked in, with playoff math on the line, and a quarterback who finally gives Chicago the firepower to punch back.
For decades, the Packers have had the quarterback in these moments. This week, the Bears get to find out if they finally do, too.
The mistake at Lambeau doesn’t define Caleb Williams. What he does next very well might.
And there’s no better place for that next chapter than Soldier Field. Under the lights. Against that team.
A chance not just to win something.
A chance to change everything.

Every week, our Chicago Bears writers will give you their Bears player to watch in the matchup ahead. Three Bears is a staple of these previews, and with Bears coverage expanding this season, I thought it would be cool to involve all of the Bears thinkers in the exercise.
Patrick Flowers: Caleb Williams — Williams said after the interception that sealed the Bears’ fate two weeks ago at Lambeau Field that he would put himself in the spot to make that throw any time. He’s got a chance this week to avenge that loss and help the Bears remain in control of the NFC North.
Luis Medina: Colston Loveland — The rookie tight end’s development this season has been wonderful to follow. It’s not just the stats that are standing out. We have seen improvements as a route-runner and a blocker, too. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has a 127.7 passer rating when targeting Loveland this season. The Bears might need more of that from that particular connection with Luther Burden III and Rome Odunze out with injuries.
Matt Rooney: DJ Moore — If it wasn’t DJ Moore’s best game of the season last week, it was certainly one of them! With Rome Odunze and Luther Burden out, Moore will be relied on to be the big/explosive play target for Caleb Williams. Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland will both play a big role, but Moore will need to be able to stretch the field a bit and open things up underneath. Look for DJ to be targeted on/make a big catch on a deep ball early.
