Do the Blackhawks Have a Goaltending Issue? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I will preface this discussion by saying the Blackhawks have zero point zero issue with the top of their depth chart in net. Spencer Knight is the present and future for the Chicago Blackhawks. Full stop. He’s the good.

Behind Knight on the depth chart? Blackhawks fans are talking…

For those wondering how long Laurent Brossoit would be in Rockford… that initial clock expired. He was recalled from Rockford and was on the ice with the Blackhawks in Chicago before they flew to Toronto.

However, Blackhawks put him on waivers Monday with hopes that, if he clears, he’ll go back to Rockford for some more run. We’ll see if he actually clears, though.

Because this continues to overwhelm the comments, let’s discuss it. No, the Blackhawks shouldn’t have put Arvid Söderblom on waiver and/or sent him to Rockford at this point instead of Brossoit.

Brossoit has appeared in three (3) games in almost two full years, and all three of those have been in the AHL. I think everyone involved wants/needs to see Brossoit get more than three AHL games under his belt before there’s a comfort level that he’s ready to help an NHL team.

The Blackhawks have likely been shopping Brossoit already. If they were shopping — or concerned about — Söderblom, I doubt they would have run the risk of exposing Brossoit to waivers.

Unfortunately, the risk the Blackhawks were going to have to take when Brossoit got healthy enough to start playing games was this: he could only be in Rockford for three games on a rehab assignment before they would have to recall him.

If another team wants to put a claim on Brossoit and take him at full price ($3.3M) based on three AHL starts in two years, God bless. I struggle to see a scenario where a team is desperate enough to take that risk.

Söderblom was just fine last year. He’s fighting it right now, no doubt. He does need to be better. Thankfully, the Blackhawks have Drew Commesso in Rockford working his way closer to being an NHL goaltender.

We’ll find out later today if Brossoit has cleared waivers. If/When he does clear and has a few more successful, healthy appearances in Rockford, this conversation is likely worth visiting again. And, now, Söderblom knows the pressure is on him to perform to keep his spot as No. 2 on the depth chart.
