ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Students may soon have more milk options in their school cafeterias. The House and the Senate have passed a bipartisan bill to bring whole and reduced-fat milk, flavored and unflavored, back into cafeterias.
The “Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act” is now heading to the president’s desk. Whole and reduced-fat milk haven’t been offered in cafeterias since 2012 for schools part of the USDA’s national school lunch and breakfast programs. The USDA aimed to reduce children’s fat consumption, but new data shows that children who drink whole milk might have lower levels of obesity.

Lawmakers hope that more milk options will increase students’ milk consumption. In addition, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says expanding milk options will support the Upstate New York dairy industry.
The state is home to nearly 3,000 dairy farms, producing over 16.1 billion pounds of milk annually. That makes New York the nation’s fifth-largest dairy-producing state. The Northeast Dairy Producers Association, which represents New York’s family dairy farms, released this statement:
“We are grateful to our champions in the Senate and House for taking action to get this bill across the finish line. We look forward to it being signed into law, as it supports science, children’s choice, and will provide another market for our family farms. Whole Milk is a pure, low-fat, and protein-packed drink. This improvement to school meals and our milk markets has been in the making for years, and we are thrilled that it’s finally getting done.”
