After Manchester United and Bournemouth played out a thriller in which all eight goals were scored by different players, we list the games that have seen the most players get on the scoresheet in a Premier League match.
Most Different Goalscorers On One Team
Eight GoalscorersSheffield United 0-8 Newcastle – 24 September 2023
Newcastle headed to Bramall Lane as favourites to beat newly promoted Sheffield United, but few could have foreseen this level of domination. They had had a largely underwhelming start to the season, losing three of their first five games and only winning their most recent one against Brentford thanks to a penalty. With this game goalless 20 minutes in and the hosts having had the better of the chances, absolutely nobody would have predicted this glut of goals and the totally unprecedented spread across the Newcastle team.
Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn, Sven Botman, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almirón, Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak all got on the scoresheet, as Eddie Howe’s team set a Premier League record for the most different goalscorers from one team in a Premier League game.
It was the second-biggest away win the Premier League has ever seen, after Leicester City’s 9-0 win at Southampton in October 2019, and the 11th occasion a team has won by at least eight goals in the Premier League era. Newcastle appear twice in our list of the biggest Premier League wins.
Seven Goalscorers (plus an own goal) Manchester United 9-0 Southampton – 2 February 2021
Remember Alexandre Jankewitz? No? Us neither.
That’d be because he only ever played three minutes in the Premier League. And those minutes were spread across two games. And he started one of them. You can see where this is going.
After coming on in the 90th minute of Southampton’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa a few days earlier, Swiss midfielder Jankewitz was handed his full Premier League debut at Old Trafford. Inside two minutes, he had been sent off and nobody has seen or heard from him since (he may or may not have continued his career back in his home country).
The red card left Southampton’s 10 men unable to contend with Manchester United and they fell apart. The McFred double pivot was simply too much for them.
United are responsible for two of the four 9-0 victories the Premier League has ever seen, and in this one, they equalled the Premier League record for the most different goalscorers from one team in a game, with seven. If you include Jan Bednarek’s own goal, then eight different players scored a United goal. This is a list of the most different scorers on one team, though, so United are second in our list.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Bednarek, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial (2), Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James got the goals, with the final two coming after Southampton had gone down to nine men, with Bednarek sent off.
Seven GoalscorersChelsea 8-0 Aston Villa – 23 December 2012
Aston Villa came into this game on the back of a 3-1 win at Liverpool, but here they came up against the notoriously attacking Rafa Benítez in the Chelsea dugout and they simply couldn’t cope.
Fernando Torres got the ball rolling three minutes into the game, but Chelsea then had to wait another 26 minutes before David Luiz doubled their lead just before the half-hour mark. That was when the floodgates opened, with Branislav Ivanovic, Frank Lampard, Ramires (2), Oscar and Eden Hazard getting in on the action.
Late on, Lucas Piazon missed a penalty with what was his only-ever shot in his only-ever Premier League appearance. He did manage an assist, though, so there is something from his Premier League career for the Brazilian to look back on fondly.
Six Goalscorers
There have been 11 occasions on which a team has had six different goalscorers in a Premier League game. They are:
Leeds 6-1 Bradford, 13 May 2001Blackburn 7-1 West Ham, 14 October 2001Arsenal 7-0 Everton, 11 May 2005Derby County 0-6 Aston Villa, 12 April 2008Manchester City 6-0 Portsmouth, 21 September 2008Arsenal 6-2 Blackburn, 4 October 2009 Aston Villa 0-6 Liverpool, 14 February 2016Manchester City 7-2 Stoke, 14 October 2017 Manchester City 8-0 Watford, 21 September 2019Manchester City 7-0 Leeds, 14 December 2021Liverpool 9-0 Bournemouth, 27 August 2022
Most Different Goalscorers In a Game
Nine GoalscorersTottenham 4-5 Arsenal – 13 November 2004
The all-time record for the most different goalscorers in a Premier League game is held by this ding dong derby between Arsène Wenger’s Invincibles and an out-of-sorts Tottenham, still reeling from the Jacques Santini era. This was Martin Jol’s first ever Premier League match as the club’s manager, and it was also up there with the highest-scoring games the Premier League has ever seen.
It took 37 minutes for the first goal to be scored, though, with Nourredine Naybet putting the hosts in front, before Thierry Henry struck back to give the game a wholly respectable 1-1 scoreline heading into half-time.
Then things went a bit loopy, as goals from Lauren – for some reason on penalty duties – and Patrick Vieira made it 3-1, before Jermain Defoe pulled one back and Freddie Ljungberg then restored Arsenal’s two-goal lead. Ledley King gave Spurs hope with an 74th-minute strike to make it 4-3, but Robert Pires took the game out of reach seven minutes later. Frederik Kanouté made it a nervy finish but his goal did little more than set a record that still stands to this day for the most different scorers in a Premier League game.
Tottenham and Arsenal didn’t have much in common during this period but they can always say they shared this special day.
Eight Goalscorers
There have been nine instances of a Premier League game seeing eight different goalscorers (excluding own goals). They are:
West Ham 5-4 Bradford, 12 February 2000Tottenham Hotspur 3-5 Manchester United, 29 September 2001Arsenal 4-4 Tottenham, 29 October 2008Arsenal 6-2 Blackburn, 4 October 2009Norwich 4-5 Liverpool, 23 January 2016Liverpool 5-3 Chelsea, 22 July 2020 Manchester City 6-3 Leicester, 26 December 2021Sheffield United 0-8 Newcastle, 24 September 2023Brentford 5-3 Wolves, 5 October 2024Manchester United 4-4 Bournemouth, 15 December 2025
