Girls’ High Point – Gabi Brito (Beach Cities Alpha), 100 Points
15-year-old Gabi Brito, representing Beach Cities Alpha, competed in six events, making finals in five of them, and winning all five. Brito also contributed to five Beach Cities Alpha relays, helping lead the club to a women’s team victory.
Brito opened her individual slate with a tight win in the 200 IM. Though just off of her best of 1:55.76, Brito managed to improve two spots from a year ago and earn the win in 1:55.99. Later in the same session, Brito picked up another win in the 50 free, this time, in lifetime best fashion. Her final time of 22.09 improved upon her previous fastest time from march of this year in 22.30. The swim improved her six spots from last year’s meet, and moved her up to 15th on the all-time 15-16 age group performers list.
Brito added a big leadoff split in the 400 medley relay for Beach Cities Alpha, opening up in 53.58 in the 100 back, just one hundredth off another best time, helping Beach Cities Alpha secure 2nd in the event.
The next day brought similar success to Brito. She claimed another title in the 100 butterfly, notching a lifetime best time of 51.55, the time improving on her previous best of 51.87. Brito was the only competitor in the field to swim under 52-seconds. She continued her momentum into the individual 100 back. Entering the day, she held a best time of 53.57, she later lowered that in the prelims to 52.92, and blew that time out of the water in finals, touching in 51.78.
Brito ended the day with a key opening leg of the 200 free relay for Beach Cities Alpha, leading off in 22.24, that relay would go on to win in 1:30.61.
The final day of competition saw Brito win her 5th individual event with the 100 free. Entering the finals, Brito was the 13th fastest performer ever in the 15-16 age group with her previous best time of 48.08. At finals, Brito swam a massive 47.77, lowering her best time, and moving her up to 7th all time in the 15-16 age group.
As mentioned, Brito helped lead Beach Cities Alpha to the girls’ and combined team title. The rest of the individual points came from Eryn Arnold (19 points), all other points came from the relays. In total, Beach Cities Alpha only had four entries on the girls’ side for the entire meet, with two of the relays picking up wins, two finishing as runner-ups, and one finishing as the 4th fastest relay.
Boys’ High Point – Ty Thomas (River City Aquatics), 74 Points
River City Aquatics’ Ty Thomas competed in five events in Austin, but did not earn an individual event victory. His best finish came in his first individual event, the 200 IM.
Thomas, the Louisville commit, entered finals as the top seed in the 200 IM after entering the meet seeded 18th. His final time of 1:44.21 bested his best time entering Austin by nearly five seconds from 1:49.05. Last year, Thomas failed to qualify for the 200 IM final, finishing 28th in 1:49.16.
Later that night, Thomas raced in the 50 free final, where he finished 5th in 19.75, just off of his best time that he set in prelims of 19.62; those two swims were the first two times that Thomas was under 20 seconds in the 50 free.
Thomas continued the best time barrage, clocking another top time in the 100 fly, placing 4th in 46.88, lowering his former best time from 47.44. Thomas later finished 7th in the 100 back final, in 47.60. He set his fastest time in the prelims, clocking 47.21.
For the final night of racing, Thomas opened up with a 3rd place finish in the 100 free, finishing as one of three in the final to crack 43 seconds, dropping over eight tenths from his best time to finish on the podium in 42.95.
