The International Olympic Committee has advanced three cities as finalists to host the 2030 Youth Olympic Games.

Asuncion, Paraguay; Bangkok, Thailand; and Santiago, Chile have been advanced toward a Targeted Dialogue phase and are considered ‘preferred hosts.’

2030 will be the 5th edition of the Games, with recent hosts of the Summer Youth Olympic Games focused on regions that don’t yet have the infrastructure to host a full Olympic Games, but that demonstrate significant growth opportunities for the Olympic movement.

The Youth Olympics have been a good way for the IOC to bring new sports or events into the Olympic movement, and similarly is serving as a way to get new nations and continents more involved in the Olympic movement via hosting duties.

Past Summer Youth Olympic Games Hosts:

Singapore 2010 Nanjing 2014 Buenos Aires 2018 Dakar, Senegal 2026 (rescheduled from 2022)

The 2026 event in Dakar, Senegal is the rescheduled 2022 Games that were canceled among the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dakar was the only prospective host invited to the candidature stage for 2022 as part of the IOC’s new host selection processes that are designed to reduce cost and corruption with only the most viable candidates advancing through the process before a finalist is ‘chosen’ rather than voted on.

“We were deeply impressed by the potential of these three projects to deliver spectacular and sustainable Youth Olympic Games,” said IOC Member Danka Hrbekova, Chair of the IOC’s Youth Olympic Games Working Group. “All three can offer recent experience of hosting international events in multiple sports, 100% existing or temporary competition venues, full political support and a shared vision that the YOG can help to achieve a better and more active future for their country’s youth.”

Asuncion has emerged as a favorite after hosting successful Junior Pan American Games in 2025. The city will also host the 2031 Pan American Games, which would create significant economies of scale for a Youth Olympic Games hosting.

The Candidature File

Asuncion, Paraguay City Population (Global Rank): 462,000 (468th) Metro Population (Global Rank): 3.6 million Country Population (Global Rank): 6.4 million (#108) Country GDP (PPP Per Capita, Global Rank): $16,300 (#95) Largest Stadium: Estadio Defensores del Chaco (~42,000) Best Pool: Centro Aquatico Nacional (~2,500) Other Notes: 100% existing or temporary competition venues A single cluster Government commitment to fund 95% of YOG budget Host of the 2013 Pan American Games Bangkok, Thailand City Population (Global Rank): 11.4 million (#6) Metro Population (Global Rank): 17.4 million Country Population (Global Rank): 70 million (#20) Country GDP (PPP, Global Rank): $21,700 (#75) Largest Stadium: Rajamangala National Stadium (~49,700) Best Pool: Rajamangala Aquatic Center (outdoor) (~4,000-5,000 with expansions) Other Notes: 100% existing or temporary infrastructure, including a university campus in Bangkok for the main athlete village One urban and one beach cluster Government commitment to fund 80% of YOG budget Santiago, Chile City Population (Global Rank): 5.6 million (#56) Metro Population (Global Rank): 7.5 million Country Population (Global Rank): 19.7 million (#63) Country GDP (PPP, Global Rank): $30,200 (#61) Largest Stadium: Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez Pradanos (48,665) Best Pool: National Stadium Aquatics Center (~3,000) Other Notes: Host of the 2023 Pan American Games 100% existing or temporary competition venues One urban and one coastal cluster Government commitment to fund 70% of YOG budget and guarantee for the construction of the Youth Olympic Village

While all three potential hosts boast 100% temporary or existing venues, part of the IOC’s sustainability initiative to avoid the optics of ghost facilities post-Olympics that host countries don’t maintain, the devil is in the details. Only Bangkok has an existing athletes’ village option in the form of a university campus, while the other two would likely have to build athlete villages (though Asuncion will have to work on that anyway for the Pan American Games).

While all three cities are situated in countries with significant mountain ranges, none of the cities really have much elevation to worry about. Bangkok and Asuncion are essentially sea level cities, while Santiago sits between 1,600 and 2,100 feet above sea level – still well below the altitudes that typically impact athletic performance.
