BUENA PARK — The longest winning streak in Orange County came to an end Saturday when Beckman fell to El Cerrito 35-12 in the CIF State Division 4-A championship game at Buena Park High.
Beckman (12-4) entered Saturday with an 11-game winning streak and was appearing in its first state championship in school history. The Patriots won their first CIF-SS championship this season when they beat Brea Olinda for the Division 8 title.
Beckman coach Marcello Giuliano told his players after the game to flush away Saturday’s result and focus on the historic season the team had.
“I’m really happy for this group. They deserve everything that they’ve earned,” Giuliano said. “This time last year, we were lifting weights to try to prepare for this season. Twelve months of unbelievable commitment from these guys, that’s what I’m proud of.”
El Cerrito (13-2) scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to pull away from Beckman after a competitive first 30 minutes of the game.
The Gauchos entered the game with a 10-game winning streak and beat Ukiah for the North Coast Section Division 3 championship this season.
Beckman’s offense was held under 20 points for the first time since its season-opening loss to Aliso Niguel. The Patriots struggled to convert third downs and were unsuccessful on three fourth-down attempts.
Makhi Czaykowski, who entered Saturday with 1,845 yards rushing and 32 total touchdowns, was battling a noticeable injury to his left leg that has been nagging him throughout the past few weeks. Czaykowski was held to 73 yards rushing, but scored the two touchdowns for Beckman.
“He’s one of those guys where you’re never going to keep him out of a game,” Giuliano said. “He really gutted it out and did the best he could for his team. That’s part of our culture. Guys are going to lay it out on the line for their teammates.”
Noah Nam threw a career-high 39 passes due to Beckman falling behind in the second half. Nam completed 22 of those passes for 234 yards.
Sawyer Nicholson led Beckman in receiving with 99 yards on five receptions. Aidan Tran caught six passes for 55 yards and Zak Hazboun had a career-high six catches.
El Cerrito’s sophomore quarterback, Dejuan Compton Jr., threw for 270 yards with four touchdowns. Three of those touchdowns were to Gary Youngblood, who had 90 yards receiving. Kamari Harris had 73 yards receiving with a touchdown for the Gauchos.
Beckman’s defense struggled to prevent big plays in the passing game. Compton Jr. completed seven passes of 20 yards or greater.
“They are really fast,” Giuliano said of El Cerrito. “It wasn’t anything complicated with their routes. It was great one-on-one football. Their quarterback throws a great ball and they are really fast.”
Skyeler Knight and Nathan Tuttle each had sacks for Beckman. Colin Singh had an interception for Beckman that halted a potential scoring drive near for El Cerrito the end of the first half.
