No. 1 Arizona annihilated No. 12 Alabama 96-75 inside Legacy Arena in Birmingham Saturday night.
Offensive rebounding continued to be lethal for the Crimson Tide. It ended the game with three total, compared to the Wildcats’ 22. Alabama also got outrebounded 52-32 total.
“This [rebounding] has been a recurring issue for us,” head coach Nate Oats said.
Alabama started off the game playing at its preferred quick pace and hit three deep shots early but found itself down 19-17 in the first seven minutes of the contest.
The tempo began to weigh on the Wildcats as Alabama went on a 7-0 run fueled by a pair of buckets by guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. to open up a 26-22 with 9:54 left in the first.
Arizona pulled back close to end the half, forcing a Crimson Tide scoring drought that lasted for over four minutes. Ultimately, Alabama took a 41-39 lead into the half.
The second half got off to a lackluster start for the Crimson Tide as the team went 1/6 from the field in the first four minutes of the half. Meanwhile, the Wildcats went 4/9 and went on a 10-0 run to take a 49-45 lead.
“Obviously they came out of halftime ready to play and we didn’t,” Oats said.
Arizona then went on a 19-4 run and grabbed virtually every available rebound while Alabama chucked up 3-point shots, desperate for an answer with 11 minutes left in the game.
“We just haven’t had very good starts to the second half,” Oats said. “It just progressively got worse.”
A dejected crowd, consisting mostly of crimson, began to file out with the Crimson Tide down 78-56. The Wildcats continued to embarrass Alabama with under eight minutes to play, leading 21-5 in rebounds.
The teams traded buckets the rest of the way, but Alabama never stood a chance at a comeback and lost by a staggering 21 points.
Guard Labaron Philon cited turnover issues as a big part of the large deficit, while Oats pointed to his player’s overall toughness and effort.
“It’s one of those games where, in hindsight, [we] probably made some mistakes. We probably should have played a few guys more minutes because the guys we had in there didn’t get the job done very well,” Oats said.
Philon was Alabama’s leading scorer in the loss with 24 points. He also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Crimson Tide will look to rebound Wednesday when it takes on USF at Coleman Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT, and the game can be streamed on SEC Network+.
