Then, just in time for holiday baking, I stumbled across a trending sugar-cookie recipe from Arkansas-based food and lifestyle creator Haley Herridge. The recipe first took off when Herridge shared it in 2023. Her followers loved it so much that she's reposted it each year since. The mini cookies—a buttery blend of salty and sweet, with a slightly chewy texture—now have thousands of fans who bake up and bag the treats as gifts for loved ones, which is exactly how Herridge herself first encountered them.
Just before Herridge left home for college, Betty taught her the recipe—and revealed that it dates back more than a century. "These cookies hold generations of love and memory," Herridge says.

What Makes This Viral Sugar Cookie Recipe Unique?

To start, Herridge's recipe uses a combo of butter and oil instead of just butter. The combination gives the cookies a rich flavor (butter) and a tender texture (oil). Granulated sugar is a given in cookies, but this recipe also uses powdered sugar in the dough. Both sugars are there for sweetness, of course, but the addition of powdered sugar in the dough helps the cookies bake up nice and light. The other unusual addition is cream of tartar, an ingredient most often associated with snickerdoodles, which adds a bit of flavor and helps add a slightly chewy texture to the bake.

My Honest Review of These Viral Sugar Cookies

As with all sugar cookies, these took some time to make, particularly when it came to scooping and hand rolling dozens of single-teaspoon balls of dough. Bear in mind that this recipe is made for sharing, yielding about 50 cookies in my test. I sent a huge number over to my neighbors and still had plenty left for us. If you're making them for a single household, consider halving the recipe.
I also struggled a bit with centering my standard-size cookie press on the mini dough balls. It bugged me that I couldn't fit the whole pattern on each cookie, but that's just me being me. No one else complained, and the finished cookies looked sparkly and fun thanks to that granulated sugar finish.
My Top Tips for Making These Cookies
This is a wonderful cookie recipe I highly recommend trying. Here are a few tips based on my own experience to help set you up for success:

Let your eggs warm up a little
Adding cold eggs to softened butter can cause the butter to re-harden, creating unwelcome chunks in your dough. If you can, take your eggs out of the fridge before you start prepping to knock off some of the chill.
Actually measure your dough balls
It may be tempting to freehand that step, but using a measuring spoon to scoop will probably yield better results. Otherwise, you could end up with cookies of different sizes, which will bake at different rates.
Know that larger cookie balls are OK too
Overall, my family and I were impressed by this recipe—and so were our neighbors. "These cookies taste like home to me," Herridge shares.
