This all follows big drops at last week’s US Open in long course (1:02.9 in the 100 breast, 2:14.8 in the 200 breast, 2:03.94 in the 200 IM).
Other Highlights from the Open-Age Division
Sophia Sileo-Magliari from the Upper Dublin Aquatic Club, a Drexel-bound high school senior, won the girls’ 100 breast in 1:01.53. That knocks half-a-second off her personal best in the event. That time would be a freshman record at Drexel if she repeats it next season. Chuck Katis, a former Cal standout and US National Team member, won the 100 breaststroke in 53.04 at 32 years old. That’s his best time since 2019 after cranking out consistent 54s over the last two years. The Masters’ Record for that age group is a 51.97 done by Brandon Fischer in 2023. The top junior finisher was his 17-year-old NCAP teammate Joey Coleman in 54.41, leading a quintet of 54-second swimmers. That’s a massive three second time drop for the high school senior Coleman, who is committed to Queens for the fall. After swimming best times in both IM events at last week’s US Open, Alex Grocholski continued his hot streak into this meet, winning the 200 free in a best time of 1:37.03. He trailed Jack Cunningham from Chelsea Piers by half-a-second going into the last 50, but split 24.48 in the final lap to win the event. He also finished 2nd in the 400 IM on Friday in 3:52.94. Gorcholski also finished 2nd in the 400 IM (3:52.94), and then really flexed his versatility by anchoring the winning NCAP 200 free relay in a 19.07 split. Emma Cigna, the defending Virginia High School Class 3 Champion in the 200 free, won that same event on Friday in 1:47.60. She just held off a late charge from LIAC’s Vivienne Zangaro, who was 2nd in 1:47.72, and Cigna’s time was about 1.3 seconds faster than her previous best to win last year’s state title.Age Group Highlights
10-year-old Anna Ringh from the Long Island Aquatic Club won four events on Friday. That included a 33.52 in the 50 breaststroke, a top 100 time in age group history. She also won the 100 free (1:00.41), the 50 fly (28.82), and split 27.35 to anchor the winning 200 free relay that set a Meet Record of 1:53.43. Other swimmers on that relay were Nadia Kim, Audrey Chandra, and Uma Hafeez. Jeffrey Qian from Asphalt Green won the 10 & under 50 breaststroke in 32.77. That ties him for 31st in the all-time age group, one spot ahead of 2008 U.S. Olympian Scott Spann. Vanessa Delev from the Badger Aquatic Club in New York picked up a win in the 11-12 girls’ 100 free in 53.66, adding to her three wins on Thursday (200 back, 500 free, 400 IM). Nathan Lee from NCAP won the boys’ 10 & under 50 fly in 27.49. That time ranks him 21st all-time in the age group, one spot behind Olympic medalist Ilya Kharun. He also split 26.59 to anchor the winning 200 free relay. There he combined with Trip Ball, Harrison Band, and Charlie Kennedy to touch in 1:55.50. Jax Torba from QNS Aquatics won the boys’ 100 back in 1:02.37, which ranks him 30th all-time in the age group. In true age grouper fashion, this is his second-straight meet with a best time in that race. Vincent D’Eramo swam a 56.94 in the boys’ 13-14 100 breaststroke to knock a full-second off his best time. He won a great battle with fellow New Yorker Ryan Yao, who took more than two seconds off his own best time to finish 2nd in 56.97. NCAP 14-year-old Manu Maher dropped more than five seconds off his personal best in the 200 free en route to a win. He swam 1:40.05 in prelims before adding a second to go 1:41.20 in finals, still able to put a clear gap on the field in the final 50. His prelims time ranks him in the top 50 all-time in the age group. 14-year-old Julia Bak from QNS Aquatic Club in New York won the 13-14 100fly in 54.20, which moves her into the top 75 in age group history. That’s a best time for her by three-tenths and would have placed her 2nd in the open-age event behind only 15-year-old Sarah Lucca (53.71). That’s a best time for Lucca, who is fresh off a New York high school state title in the event. NCAP’s Rafa Fontana won the boys’ 13-14 100 fly in 50.03, also putting him in the top 75 in age group history. Madison Suchecki from the Suburban Seahawks in Pennsylvania won the 400 IM in 4:19.75, a four second improvement on her lifetime best. She roared to the front of the pack with a 59.96 backstroke leg and inched away to win the race by seven seconds. 14-year-old Ryan Yao knocked more than seven seconds off his personal best in the 400 IM to win in 3:59.27. A great battle between him and Rafa Fontana saw Fontana take a huge early lead, Yao claw back to dead even on the breaststroke leg (1:07.44 split), then pull away for the win on the freestyle.Read the full story on SwimSwam: 16-Year-Old Luc Dionne Drops 7.5 Seconds in the 400 IM to Win at Katie Ledecky Invite
