After leading off Swim Atlanta’s 400 medley relay with a 45.06 split last night, Collin Holgerson delivered one of the most impressive doubles of the meet by firing off a 44.94 in the 100 back mere minutes after winning the 100 breast in 52.51.

His swim broke Will Modglin‘s 2022 meet record, and he becomes the fastest high schooler in history in this event despite only being a junior. Fittingly, SwimSwam recently highlighted Modglin’s ability  to excel in both the backstroke and breaststrokes after he swam a 50.9 in the 100 breast and 43.2 in the 100 back at Texas’ midseason invite. Out of high school, Modglin’s bests were 52.9 and 45.0—he is now the American record holder in the 100 back. Holgerson Lead-Off, Old PB Holgerson, New PB Will Modglin Meet Record (2022) 50 21.80 21.65 21.74 100 45.06 (23.26) 44.94 (23.29) 45.01 (23.27)

Holgerson climbs up to #3 in his age group rankings with this swim and joins an exclusive list of who 17-18 year old boys that have broken the 45 barrier:

All-Time Performers, Boys’ 17–18 100 Backstroke (SCY)

Ryan Murphy, 44.63 – 2014 Adam Chaney, 44.74 – 2021 Collin Holgerson, 44.94 — 2025 Owen McDonald, 45.00 – 2023 Will Modglin, 45.01 – 2022 Nicolas Albiero, 45.05 – 2018 Johnny Crush, 45.08 – 2024 Hudson Williams, 45.28 – 2024 Jack Conger, 45.32 – 2012 Austin Katz, 45.34 – 2017

Meanwhile, his time of 52.21 ties Liam Bell—the former American record holder in the 100 breast—for #20 all time in the 17-18 age group.

Earlier in the meet, Holgerson swam a best time of 1:43.23 in the 200 IM to finish 2nd, dropping about 1.2 seconds. He also led off  SwimAtlanta’s 6th-place 200 medley relay in 21.02, a split that was equal to or faster than 12 leadoff legs in this relay at last year’s NCAA Championship meet. The Tennessee native has the 200 back on his schedule tomorrow, where he is seeded 3rd behind Cal commits Baylor Stanton and Davis Jackson.

Holgerson is the #4 recruit in the high school class of 2027, and represented the US at the World Junior Championships over the summer. There, he took 10th in the 100 back in 55.21 and led off Team USA’s 400 medley relay in prelims with a time of 55.67. He will stay in state for college, as he has committed to swim for Tennessee next fall.
