CSU Rams defeat Dartmouth for fourth straight win ...Saudi Arabia

FORT COLLINS — Colorado State shook off a slow start to win its fourth-straight game Tuesday, defeating Dartmouth 76-55 at Moby Arena.

With only one game remaining before the Rams begin their final run through the Mountain West Conference, CSU improved to 8-2 on the season.

CSU, one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country, made only seven of its 18 shots from beyond the arc, but the Rams’ defense, although shaky at times, played well enough to hold the Big Green to the fewest points by an opponent this season.

First-year head CSU head coach Ali Farokhmanesh credited some of the first-half troubles to the team coming down from an emotional win over Colorado on Saturday, but he was happy with the way the team regrouped and responded in the second half after taking a nine-point lead into halftime.

“That’s human nature that after you have an emotional game like that on Saturday night in front of a sold-out arena and in the ups and downs of what that game was, it’s hard to get ready for the next one,” Farokhmanesh said. “I’m glad we got the win, and we won by a good margin and the guys responded in the second half the way that we wanted to.”

Brandon Rechsteiner led the Rams with 14 points, all in the first half. Kyle Jorgensen had 12, Jevin Muniz 11 and Josh Pascarelli and Jase Butler 10 each.

The Big Green held Pascarelli, who had made 16 of 18 3-pointers in the Rams’ previous two games, in check. Both of his attempts from the arc came in the second half and both went in.

Twelve Rams got in on the action and all 12 scored at least two points.

“I think we’ve shown we can be successful on offense in multiple ways already this year,” Farokhmanesh said. “I think they take what the game gives them.”

The game was tight for the first five minutes until back-to-back 3-pointers by Rechsteiner turned an 8-6 deficit into a 12-8 lead for the Rams.

CSU’s largest lead of the first half was 11 points and came after a jumper by Rechsteiner gave the Rams a 25-14 lead with 5:19 remaining in the opening period.

Dartmouth chipped away in the final five minutes before halftime and cut the CSU lead down to five with 1:17 left before the break. CSU then got a layup by Jorgensen, a steal by Carey Booth and then a layup by Rechsteiner at the buzzer to give the Rams a nine-point advantage, 33-24, at halftime.

Early in the second half, Dartmouth cut the CSU lead to 35-31 before the Rams went on a 14-3 run to go ahead 49-34 with 10:46 remaining in the game. After a basket by the Big Green, the Rams continued their run and eventually took their largest lead of the game at 74-50 with 1:31 left on the clock.

The Rams held Dartmouth to 40% shooting and forced 15 turnovers, but they believe they could have played better defensively and it will be something they work on as conference play nears.

“I felt like we didn’t defend the way we could. We still won the game, so it was better to learn that way,” CSU’s Jace Butler said. “But the coaches, we made a big emphasis in practice, just that you’ve got to defend to be the team you want to be ultimately.”

The Rams outrebounded the Big Green 25-23 and had a 13-12 edge in assists. There were only 11 free throws attempted in the game. CSU made all three of its attempts while Dartmouth was 4-of-8. The Rams ended up shooting 61.1% from the field in the contest.

CSU will play its final nonconference game of the season Sunday against Northern New Mexico at 1 p.m. at Moby Arena. The Rams will open Mountain West Conference play Dec. 20 at Utah State.
