ALBANY, N.Y. — The New York Times reported that Governor Kathy Hochul pushed Director Felicia Reid and Deputy Counsel James Rodgers out of the Office of Cannabis Management, on Monday.
Hochul cited the agency’s dropping of a major enforcement case against Long Island manufacturer Omnium Health, right before it was set to go to trial. Omnium Health is accused of illegally licensing out-of-state companies to make their own products.
According to reports, Omnium Health used out-of-state cannabis companies such as “Stiiizy,” “Grön,” and “Mfused” to make their own products.
Officials didn’t give a reason for the case withdrawal, the timing of the action, or whether the governor ordered it.
“Too often, the Office of Cannabis Management has stood in the way of the market realizing its potential, including most recently in the case of a pending compliance action that it has had to withdraw,” Governor Hochul told the New York Times.
The agency’s chief administrative officer, Susan Filburn, will now lead the agency as interim, according to an email she sent to the agency’s governing board.
