But Rush knew how much of a risk it was to make the album. "It could have spelled the end for us," Alex Lifeson told NPR in an interview. "To me it was impossible to take a step backwards and do something we'd already done just to please a record company."
He hadn't heard any of the music himself yet, but he told Mercury Records, as Lifeson recalled, "You guys are going to love this next record. The guys are back on track."
2112 came out in March 1976, and thankfully, music fans recognized the genius of the song and album. It was Rush's first commercial success, with the album peaking on the Billboard album chart at No. 61.
While fans love the entire album, decades after it was released, "2112" is still the standout. Parts of the song have been performed a lot over the years, but during the 2026 reunion tour, Rush finally played it in its entirety again for the first time in almost 30 years.
