BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Erie Canal’s bicentennial season has come to an end. However, several viewers have noticed that the canal’s water hasn’t been drained, even though it’s December.
Meghan in Spencerport says: “I’ve noticed that the Erie Canal is still at its normal level when usually they’ve lowered it by now.” John also wrote to us saying, “Wondering why the canal hasn’t been drained in the Brockport area?”
There’s a noticeable difference between the east side of the canal in Fairport and the west side in Brockport. The New York State Canal Corporation told News10NBC that there are two reasons why the water levels look higher in some areas, like Brockport and Spencerport.
The first reason? Fall fishing. The Canal Corp has kept the western part of the canal fuller for longer to help anglers.
Second, the bicentennial season. The navigation season ended on Nov. 3 this year, three weeks later than usual, putting crews slightly behind schedule to drain the canal for the winter. The Canal Corporation is in the process of lowering water levels this week. Winter water levels can drop anywhere between a few inches to a few feet, depending on the location.
