Former Democratic state Rep. Michael Wray is asking Republicans in his district to change their party affiliation so they can support him in next year’s primary.
Wray, who served 10 terms in the House, lost a close primary race to Democratic incumbent Rep. Rodney Pierce by 34 votes last year.
Wray was criticized by Pierce and other Democrats for siding with the Republican House majority on key votes, including veto overrides.
Wray posted his appeal to Republicans on his campaign Facebook page on Monday morning.

“You can temporarily change your party affiliation to UNAFFILIATED, but you must do so BEFORE FEBRUARY 6TH. If you make the switch, remember that on election day, you must ask for a Democratic ballot in order to vote for Michael,” the post says.
As he announced his plans for a rematch, Wray leaned into his work with Republicans, saying it helped him secure money for the district.
“I am not going to apologize for working in the back rooms of the State Legislature to make sure that our region gets money from the state budget,” Wray said in a July statement.
The district includes Warren, Halifax and Northampton counties. It is heavily Democratic, so the primary winner will likely win the seat.
Pierce faced no general election opponent last year.
Pierce said in a fundraising email last month that district residents haven’t benefited from the successes Wray claims.
Wray’s appeal to Republicans is not surprising, Pierce said in a statement Monday.
“My opponent has been misleading voters for years,” Pierce said. “He thinks that Democratic voters are dumb, which is why they rejected him the last time. While I represent all of my neighbors here in District 27, I’m running as a Democrat.”
In a statement provided to NC Newsline, Wray said he’s providing information to Republicans who support him on how to vote for him.
“It’s information these voters want to support my campaign,” his statement said.
