Damascus, Dec.8 (SANA) President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Ahmad al-Sharaa, congratulated on Monday the Syrian people on the first anniversary of the liberation of the country, pointing to the development of a clear vision for the new Syria, a strong state that belongs to its glorious past which looks forward to its promising future and restores its natural position in its Arab, regional and international environment.
President al-Sharaa said that the era of the deposed regime was a dark page in the history of our country, in which the tyrant held power for a time, but he soon fell, so that the lights of insight, good dialogue, and bridges of love and brotherhood could shine again.
“Damascus became the focus of hearts and the balance of interests, and people’s stories about Syria and its people changed from pity to admiration and pride, all of that in one year, praise be to God,” President Ahmad al-Sharaa said in a speech at the Liberation Day celebration held at the Conferences’ Palace in Damascus.
“To the heroes who gave their lives to liberate the country, to the mothers who endured loss yet never lost hope, to the children who faced orphanhood and the darkness of loss before knowing life’s meaning, and to the great Syrian people who stood strong through years of oppression at home and abroad,” the President said.
“You are present at the heart of history, represent heroism and the story of a great victory. We congratulate you on the anniversary of Syria’s liberation from tyranny and oppression, and on the return of the homeland to its people, proud, free, and dignified, as it has always been,” President al-Sharaa said.
He added that the Syrians have lost Damascus, the jewel of the East, for more than five decades.
“They tried to strip it of its identity, civilization, and historical depth, and they tried in vain to bury it time and time again. But how can the moons hide their faces, and how can the sun obscure its light,” the President affirmed.
He went on to say that “here is Damascus. From this city, humanity once advanced, and from here, it shall rise again. From this sacred land, the breezes of faith have touched human hearts. Here, people have come to understand the true meaning of compassion, loyalty, justice, and wisdom—values passed down from generation to generation.”
“What I admire about you, O Sham, is that you possess goodness, good company, kindest hearts, most astute minds, and most brilliant intellects. Your people were the most courageous when rights were taken away and dignity was insulted, and they realized early on those rights are seized, not given, that freedom has a price that must be paid, that victory comes with patience, and that with hardship comes ease. And for all of that, there was a beautiful gift,” the President said .
He stressed that the former regime sought to sow division among our people and instill fear, turning citizenship into a tool of loyalty and servitude, weakening the nation, and dragging the country to the lowest ranks in all fields.
“It built a system of lawlessness and corruption, keeping the people poor and ignorant, denying their rights, and making free speech a crime, creativity a disgrace, and patriotism a liability,” President al-Sharaa said.
He added that today, with the dawn of freedom, we announce a historic break with that legacy, a complete elimination of the illusion of falsehood, and a permanent departure from the era of despotism and tyranny towards a new dawn based on justice, benevolence, citizenship, coexistence, creativity, and brilliance in building the nation.
The President said that the end of our battle with the former regime was but the beginning of a new battle in the fields of work and diligence, a battle to match words with deeds, promises with fulfillment and values with adherence.
“The people have entrusted us with their confidence after years of oppression and injustice, and have placed in us the responsibility of leadership. Let our motto be honesty and our pledge be building a better future,” the President said.
He added that from the first moment of liberation, we traveled across the governorates, listening to the people’s concerns and demands, and developed a clear vision for a strong Syria—rooted in its history, looking to the future, and reclaiming its rightful place regionally and internationally.
“We presented this vision to the world, welcoming delegations and visiting other countries. Syrian diplomacy has reshaped Syria’s image abroad, establishing it as a trusted partner in the region and beyond,” President al-Sharaa affirmed.
On the economic and investment level, President al-Sharaa said that “we have established strategic partnerships with friendly countries in vital sectors including energy, ports, airports, real estate and communications. These partnerships have contributed to strengthening economic recovery, opening investment opportunities, creating job opportunities and improving the structure of the national economy.”
At the level of life and living, President al-Sharaa added “we were keen on rationalize the economic policy so that it would be reflected directly on the citizens, so we gradually raised the level of income, alleviated suffering and established a more stable and just environment.”
“We have united the various military forces into a professional national army loyal to the homeland, strengthening security and stability,” the President affirmed.
“As we build a new Syria, we reaffirm our commitment to transitional justice, holding perpetrators accountable while protecting victims’ rights and ensuring justice,” the President added.
He added that the people’s right to know and to question, followed by accountability or reconciliation, is the foundation of the state’s stability and a guarantee against the recurrence of violations. It is the cornerstone for building trust between the citizen and the state.
“We will never forget the missing persons and their families, who represent a humanitarian issue of prior importance, one on which there can be no compromise. We are committed to relentlessly pursuing the truth,” President al-Sharaa said.
“Dear Syrian people, you have shown the world that victory is only the beginning. Let us continue the story of a resilient people, making victory a responsibility through diligence, action, justice, and compassion, and raising our beloved homeland to the ranks of advanced nations,” the President said.
To those who paved the way with their blood, suffering, and sacrifices—fighters, prisoners, martyrs, the wounded, and their families—we extend our deepest respect and peace, President al-Sharaa concluded.
