Putin congratulates al-Sharaa on first anniversary of “change” in Syria ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, in a cable sent on the occasion of the first anniversary of the change in Syria.

The congratulations coincided with the first direct contact between the new Syrian government and Russian forces, the most prominent ally of the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad.

The Russian state-run RT channel reported on Thursday evening, 5 December, quoting Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin, that President Vladimir Putin had sent a congratulatory cable to Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on the occasion of one year since change in Syria.

Syria is marking the first anniversary of liberation and the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, as Syrian cities witness vibrant popular and cultural activities, alongside official parades and celebrations that embody the meaning of steadfastness and entrench national values associated with the memory of liberation.

Cooperation with the Russians

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani recounted, in an interview with the Saudi magazine Al -Majalla, behind-the-scenes details of the dialogue with the Russians after the liberation of Aleppo on 1 December 2024.

Al-Shibani said that after Aleppo was taken, and with the start of the offensive on Hama, “we made contact with the Russians, and the party we spoke to was much higher than the Russian base, I will not disclose it, but it was as though I were speaking with President Vladimir Putin himself.”

He pointed out that the meeting took place at the Bab al-Hawa crossing (on the Syrian Turkish border in northwestern Syria), where he told them, “How many times will you give Aleppo back to the regime, given that it was Russia that handed Aleppo to it in 2016?”

At the time, the Syrian foreign minister delivered a clear message to the Russians, stating that “bringing down Bashar’s regime does not mean Russia’s departure from Syria.”

On 15 October, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa visited Moscow in his first official foreign visit since taking office in late 2024 following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. During the trip, he held talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that addressed bilateral relations and regional and international developments.

During the meeting, Putin affirmed that the interests of the Syrian people are what always drive Moscow’s policy, and declared his country’s readiness to enhance communication and coordination through the foreign ministries of both states.

For his part, al-Sharaa confirmed Syria’s commitment to all previous agreements signed with Russia, and his government’s keenness to deepen the strategic partnership between the two sides.

“Deterring Aggression”

The first year has now passed since “Deterring Aggression”, the battle that lasted 11 days and toppled a regime that had ruled Syria for more than 50 years with iron and fire, and since a revolution that lasted 14 years, during which hundreds of thousands were killed under bombardment or disappeared in prisons, in addition to millions displaced inside and outside the country.

The battle brought together many factions that had previously fought and bled one another in bouts of infighting that left at least hundreds of their own fighters dead.

The first shot in the “Deterring Aggression” battle was fired on the western Aleppo countryside front, from the towns of Anjara and Qebtan al-Jabal and the surrounding towns and villages. The campaign continued until it reached Damascus and ended with the overthrow of the Syrian regime on 8 December 2024.
