The Minnesota Twins Want Everyone to Know They Aren’t Trading Anyone Away, So Stop Asking, But Also Maybe Keep Asking ...Middle East

Given how much they tore it down at the Trade Deadline, and given the ongoing attempts to sell the franchise, it has been fair to surmise that the Minnesota Twins wouldn’t be doing a whole lot of adding this offseason. Moreover, it was fair to assume that the Twins would continue to be open for business if trade partners wanted to send over an offer.

The rumors therefore followed, with chatter on Byron Buxton, Joe Ryan, and Pablo Lopez, among others.

Nothing has come to fruition, however, and now the Twins want to put the word out that they’re totally not trading anyone away now:

“Finances presumably remain an issue, but trades of players such as Ryan and Buxton would further alienate the fan base. Club officials believe the team is talented enough to compete in the AL Central, one of baseball’s weaker divisions. They recently hired a new manager, Derek Shelton. And now that they have clarity from ownership, they believe they have ‘mild flexibility. to make additions ….

Rival clubs interested in Ryan, Buxton and López almost certainly will keep pushing to acquire them, as teams always seek to add high-end players. The Twins will listen, as clubs in their position are obligated to do. But it likely would take an overwhelming offer for any of the three to be traded.”

If I could cynically translate for the Twins, speaking to a couple of audiences: “The trade offers have sucked, and we need our season ticket holders to renew.”

Thus, an announcement that they’re probably not going to trade any of their stars. That way, any offers from here would have to be better than whatever they were receiving, and also maybe some fans will be comforted that the team won’t be further decimated by the time they get to the ballpark.

I’m not sure how well any of this actually works, mind you. If I’m a buyer of pitching, it’s not like I’m taking this as my signal to bid against myself and offer the Twins more, much as the Twins might hope for that. There remain a LOT of compelling free agent pitchers and tradable pitchers on the market. Would it be nice if Pablo Lopez and Joe Ryan were among the options? Sure. But threatening that they’re off the market doesn’t really change a fundamental calculus for most teams.

As for the fan messaging, I suppose it depends on how credible the organization is after the twists and turns of the last two years. I leave that to Twins fans to decide, and to contemplate what is going to happen at the Trade Deadline in July.
