2025 Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 Girls State Championships
Nov. 21-22 Holland, Michigan SCY (25 yards) ResultsIt was a three-peat for East Grand Rapids and a four-peat for Dearborn Divine Child swimmer Ella Dziobak at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 State Championships.
East Grand Rapids easily outdistanced runner-up Marian, which totaled 228 points.
Committed to Purdue, Dziobak made it four straight state titles in the 500 free, winning the event this year in a personal best time of 4:56.20.
Dziobak also claimed the 200 free in a time of 1:51.10.
“This was a real fun way to wrap up high school swimming by winning the 500 a fourth time,” Dziobak said to the MHSAA website. “I could see all of my teammates cheering for me before the race started, and that got me fired up. I definitely excel in the distance events more than the sprints. I swam my fastest time of the year in the 200 as well, so that was nice too.”
The other multi-event winners were East Grand Rapids senior Ellery Chandler and Holland Christian junior Camryn Siegers.
Committed to Arkansas, Chandler won the 100 breast in 1:01.78 and the 100 fly in 54.11, both personal best times. She won her third straight title in the 100 breast and second straight in the 100 fly.
An Alabama commit, Siegers won the 50 free in 22.79 and the 100 back in 53.37, both personal best times. It was her third straight title in the 100 back and second consecutive in the 50 free.
The 200 IM was won by East Grand Rapids junior Addie Hein, who repeated in a time of 2:06.74.
Josi Popma, a junior from Hamilton, won 1-meter diving with 399.40 points.
In the 100 free, Wayland Union senior Laney Wolf won in a personal best time of 50.60.
The relays were swept by East Grand Rapids.
In the 200 medley relay, the squad of Meredith Sperling (26.95), Hein (30.16), Chandler (23.78) and Catherine Sowerby (23.76) touched the wall first in 1:44.65.
The 200 free relay was won by the East Grand Rapids team of Nora Camfferman (25.10), Della Avendt (24.67), Ivy Chu (24.21) and Chandler (22.76) in 1:36.74.
In the 400 free relay, the quartet of Sparling (53.37), Nalah Mamatela (54.20), Sowerby (52.37) and Chu (52.88) won in 3:32.82.
That relay dominance helped guide East Grand Rapids to its 11th state title since 2009 under head coach Butch Briggs, who just completed his 52nd year coaching at the school.
“We have a very deep team and a squad that got along with one another very well without any drama,” Briggs said to the MHSAA site. “There were a few events in which we had three state placers in. That piles up a ton of points for you. It was such a fun season, and I can’t say enough good things about these kids. My assistant coach runs the little kids’ program for me at East Grand Rapids. Coaching continuity has had a great deal to do with our success as well.”
