It hasn’t been my intention to launch an Obsessive Michael King Watch, and we’re not quite there yet, but I’m aware I’m bringing up his name a whole lot lately. To be fair, he’s been raised in connection to the Cubs quite frequently, and I feel duty-bound to mention it!
The latest comes from Bruce Levine in a hit on 670 The Score, where he confirms that he’s heard about the Cubs’ interest there:
The Cubs like Michael King and will continue to monitor his free agency, Bruce Levine told Mully & Haugh. pic.twitter.com/QwLQ9AVM2F
— 670 The Score (@670TheScore) December 4, 2025The Cubs like Michael King, Levine said, before raising the questions about his health and innings pitched. When he’s been able to be on the mound the last few years, King has been dominant. But it’s because of those injury/durability questions that Levine wonders if he gets only two or three years.
From where I sit, even with the risks, I think the 30-year-old righty could get four years if that were his goal. It might not get much past $80 million or so if he did, but I think there’s a team out there that would take that chance (and man, if he were willing to do 4/$80M, I’d want the Cubs to jump on that – roll the dice!).
The flip side there is that King may want to bet on himself, taking a short-term or opt-out-laden deal so he can try to hit the market again after showing where he is physically in 2026. If that’s the case, I wonder how interested the Cubs would be. On the one hand, they love shorter-term deals, especially for pitchers. On the other hand, they definitely don’t have a preference for early opt-outs if they’re committing a significant guarantee.
Also interesting the possible trade names Levine throws out for the Cubs – Joe Ryan, Sandy Alcantara, and MacKenzie Gore. We already know about those possibilities, dating back to the Trade Deadline, but I think the point is that the Cubs have multiple pitchers AND multiple paths they can consider. The Winter Meetings are next week, though, and you’d love to know what your biggest move is going to be by then, so that you’re not left holding the bag later on. Instead, you can be opportunistic later on, knowing that you got your 1A move completed.
