Former Lakers big man Elden Campbell, who spent the first 8 ½ years of his 15-season NBA career with the franchise, died on Tuesday.
He was 57 years old.
The cause of death wasn’t known as of Wednesday morning.
Campbell, who went to Morningside High before playing for Clemson from 1986-1990, was the Lakers’ first-round draft pick in 1990.
The 6-foot-11 Campbell averaged 10.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots during his NBA career.
Campbell’s most productive years with the Lakers came from 1993-98, when he averaged 12.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots across five seasons.
He averaged a career-high 14.9 points with the Lakers in 1996-97.
Campbell also played for the Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets, Seattle SuperSonics, Detroit Pistons and New Jersey Nets during his NBA career.
He was on the 2003-2004 Pistons team that beat the Lakers in the 2004 NBA Finals.
Campbell was part of the 2025 Southern California Basketball Hall of Fame.
He was an All-CIF player at Inglewood’s Morningside before becoming Clemson’s all-time leading scorer.
Clemson acknowledged Campbell’s death Wednesday morning: “We mourn the loss of Elden Campbell, our all-time leading scorer, All-American and three-time All-ACC player, who passed away at the age of 57.”
