PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The American Heart Association held its annual “Go Red for Women” luncheon on Tuesday. The event at Monroe Golf Club in Pittsford raised funding for life-saving research and raised awareness about the threat heart disease poses for women in particular.

News10NBC’s Nikki Rudd emceed the event. Megan Vargulick, executive director of the American Heart Association for Rochester and Buffalo, emphasized the importance of women prioritizing their health.

“Sometimes we may put others first, ignore symptoms, not question your doctor, not go to the doctor, and really think everything’s fine,” Vargulick said. “But this group of women really share their stories. There are some survivors in the room who like to tell what they’ve experienced and really make people feel confident to make a change.”

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, claiming more lives than all cancers combined.
