Women’s basketball wins its fifth-grade fast break game against Kennesaw State ...Middle East

Alabama returned to Coleman Coliseum on Monday for its fifth-grade fast break game defeating Kennesaw State 79-65.

Fifth graders from five local Tuscaloosa schools brought the coliseum to life with their cheers during the game as the Crimson Tide battled against the Owls.

“At one point, we were those little kids sitting in those seats, and there was somebody along the line that inspired us to want to play college basketball, and now we are the ones put in that position to be that for those kids,” guard Karly Weathers said. “It was a lot of fun to see them smiling and having a good time today.”

The Crimson Tide started the game controlling the court, being the first to put up points, and establishing a 29-13 point lead in the first quarter.

This ability to control the court shortly slipped out of reach for Alabama, though, as Kennesaw State battled to gain the points needed, pushing Alabama into multiple scoring droughts.

“A good game for me has nothing to do with scoring,” Weathers said. “Growing up, I was taught to be an all-around player. I was taught to be a really good practice player and to be a really good game player. And it never scored the most points. That was never what was told to me.”

Despite Kennesaw’s ability to keep control of the ball for long periods of time, Alabama was able to limit them to  .85 points per possession.

This game marks the first home game since Alabama’s game against Stetson, where the Crimson Tide has allowed an opponent to hit the 50-point mark, effectively breaking Alabama’s five-game streak.

“Every game’s a new game and a new day,” head coach Kristy Curry said. “We obviously did not play to the standard today defensively.”

During the game against Stetson, Alabama narrowly secured its victory 83-73. Since then, Alabama has maintained at least a 20-point gap between its final score and its opponent’s final score until Kennesaw.

“We found a way to win by double digits,” Curry said. “Credit to our team for finding a way to win.”

Alabama will return to Coleman Coliseum on Thursday, where the team will take on Clemson. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT, and the game can be streamed on SEC Network+.
