It Looks Like the Bears Have a New Starter on the Offensive Line ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Ozzy Trapilo might have played himself into a starting role in what might be the most important stretch of the Chicago Bears’ season.

After stepping into the starting lineup in Week 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers after Theo Benedet was ruled out with an injury, Trapilo was thrust back into a starting role in Week 13 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Even though his 59.7 grade from Pro Football Focus in Week 13 didn’t come close to matching his Herculean Week 12 efforts, Trapilo played well enough to garner an extended look at left tackle. At a minimum, the Boston College product seems to have impressed Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson.

This Ben Johnson quote (via 670 The Score’s Chris Emma) stands out:

“We’re always going to play the guy that gives us the best chance to win the ballgame. And so that’s where it starts. I think he’s an ascending player. He’s still developing, and he’s going to continue to get better the more reps he has.”

There is a larger discussion to be had about what the Bears could, should, and will do about the left tackle situation in the offseason. We will cross that bridge when we get to it. In the meantime, Ozzy Trapilo can stake his claim to the long-term starting gig if he can perform well in December and into January.

Will Ozzy Trapilo keep his starting job?

Bears rookie offensive lineman Ozzy Trapilo might have locked in a starting role for the time being, but I’m not sure how long it will last. However, I am open to seeing if he can hold onto the gig. Because, if he can, it makes Chicago’s offseason to-do list a little shorter. Plus, I might do a cartwheel if the 2025 NFL Draft class can yield another starting-caliber player.

Trapilo was one of the Bears’ three second-round picks from their 2025 NFL Draft class that has produced contributors from each day. Rookie tight end Colston Loveland’s play has been picking up since the bye week. Mizzou product Luther Burden III, another second-round pick, has seen an uptick in snaps recently and is vying for a larger slice of the target pie. Running back Kyle Monangai, a seventh-round selection, has teamed up with D’Andre Swift to create a formidable backfield tag team. But with that being said, Ozzy Trapilo stepping into the left tackle role and thriving down the stretch would tie it all together.

Of course, it won’t be a walk in the park for Ozzy Trapilo. Protecting the blindside of quarterback Caleb Williams comes with great responsibility — as well as a heaping amount of challenges. In the coming weeks, Trapilo (and the rest of Chicago’s offensive line) will deal with Micah Parsons (Weeks 14 and 16), Myles Garrett (Week 15), and Aidan Hutchinson (Week 18). Those guys are absolute game-wreckers and can cause chaos for the rookie transitioning from being a right tackle to playing on the left side. But if Bears coaches such as Ben Johnson and Offensive Line Coach Dan Roushar didn’t think Trapilo could hold his own, I don’t think they would be putting him out there on that island.
