St. Joseph Girls Return To Top, Catholic Boys Win Again At Louisiana Division 1 State Meet ...Middle East

After seeing a 13-year run as state champions end last season, it didn’t take long for the St. Joseph’s girls team to get back on top at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division I State Championships.

St. Joseph’s won its 14th title in 15 years, reclaiming the title by finishing 30.5 points ahead of the team that ended its run last year, St. Mary’s Dominican.

In the boys’ event, Catholic High School claimed its third straight state championship, winning by 110 points over runner-up Jesuit High School.

Division I is the largest of the four swimming classifications in Louisiana.

Girls’ Recap

St. Joseph’s only won one event, and that came courtesy of junior Molly Mayo, who captured the 200 IM in a personal best time of 2:07.63.

The multi-event winners were Southside junior Andi Clement and Mandeville sophomore Avery Daigle.

Committed to Iowa State, Clement first repeated as champion in the 50 free, swimming a personal best time of 23.43. Clement then won the 100 free in a personal best time of 50.97, improving on a 2nd-place finish last year.

Daigle won the 100 fly in a time of 54.02 and then later captured the 100 back in a personal best time of 54.14.

Daigle was also a part of Mandeville’s winning 200 medley relay team. The quartet of Kenzie Douglas (28.78), Emma Dobie (29.38), Daigle (23.65) and Sydney Eagan (23.49) topped the field in a time of 1:45.30.

St. Mary’s Dominican won the other two relays.

The team of  Marta Giarusso (25.49), Lila Merchant (25.36), Blair Foss (25.28) and Terese Voice (24.44) won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:40.57.

In the 400 free relay, the squad of Bre Palmisano (55.13), Kendall Jollands (52.03), Annalise Gagliano (52.30) and Lila Merchant (52.85) won in a time of 3:32.31.

Other individual winners were:

Jollands, a junior who has committed to Arizona, won the 200 free in a personal best time of 1:52.49. She won the 100 back and 100 fly at last year’s state meet. Byrd sophomore Macy Monday captured the 500 free in a personal best time of 5:07.76. Avery Aubrey, a junior from Byrd and Liberty commit, won the 100 breast in a personal best time of 1:02.86 after taking 3rd in the event last year.

Boys’ Recap

Catholic was paced by junior Noah Vargas, who first won the 200 IM in a personal best time of 1:51.67. He later repeated as champion in the 100 breast with a time of 55.83.

The other multi-event winners were Jesuit senior Aidan Villars and Northshore junior Gus Castilho.

Villars repeated as champion in the 100 fly with a personal best time of 48.09, and then won the 100 back in a personal best time of 48.38.

Castilho was the sprint freestyle king of the meet, winning the 50 free in 21.02 and the 100 free in 45.82, both personal best times.

The other individual winners were St. Paul’s junior Jake Bergeron in the 200 free with a personal best time of 1:41.00, and Southside junior Hunter Fudge in the 500 free in a personal best time of 4:37.10.

Jesuit’s team of Grant Castillon (24.57), Ben Breithaupt (25.90), Villars (21.20) and Conor Samuels (21.89) won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:33.56.

The 200 free relay was won by the St. Paul’s squad of Daniel Eversgerd (22.65), Dominic Barcelona (22.41), Christopher Lobue (22.17) and Jake Bergeron (20.94) in 1:28.17.

In the 400 free relay, Catholic’s team of Blake Talbert (46.85), Johnathan Kirk (48.01), Ben Faulk (48.45) and Vargas (46.40) won in a time of 3:09.71.
