Eddie Howe was able to celebrate an away win for the first time in a while. Look back on an entertaining game with the best facts and Opta data in our Everton vs Newcastle stats page.
Newcastle finally secured their first away win of the 2025-26 Premier League season as they thrashed Everton 4-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.
Not only had Eddie Howe’s men failed to win on the road in the league this term, but they’d lost each of their past three top-flight away games.
That was part of a winless run that stretched back nine away matches, last having a poorer run (12) between December 2015 and August 2017.
But Newcastle took the lead inside the first minute and never looked back, finding themselves 3-0 up by half-time.
Everton improved somewhat after the break, having a goal disallowed before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall pulled one back legally in brilliant fashion.
But it was much too little, much too late.
Newcastle wasted no time putting Everton under pressure as Anthony Elanga charged forward and tested Jordan Pickford with an effort after just 20 seconds.
And from the resulting corner, Malick Thiaw put Newcastle in front with only 52 seconds played, making it the quickest goal of the season ahead of Phil Foden’s first against Leeds earlier in the day.
Lewis Miley provided the delivery for the opener, and he then got his own name on the scoresheet in the 25th minute.
After Everton made a mess of clearing their lines, Dan Burn managed to block Tino Livramento’s wayward shot and the ball fell kindly for Miley, who lashed a left-footed effort that squirmed through Jordan Pickford and into the net.
That made Miley (19 years, 212 days) the second youngest Newcastle player to score and assist in a Premier League game.
Newcastle weren’t done there, though.
Elanga caused chaos again down the right before squaring a bouncing ball to Nick Woltemade, who coolly lobbed the helpless Pickford.
It was the first time since December 2018 (vs Tottenham) that Everton had conceded three goals in the first half of a Premier League home game – David Moyes needed a response.
He introduced Charly Alcaraz from the bench at the interval and the midfielder almost got Everton back in the contest when he sent a thunderous effort crashing against the crossbar in the 53rd minute. That came shortly after Everton forced Aaron Ramsdale – making his first league start for Newcastle in the absence of the injured Nick Pope – into a first save through Iliman Ndiaye.
But any encouragement gleaned from those moments was quickly eroded just before the hour.
Lewis Hall delivered a gorgeous cross and Thiaw was there to nod home at the back post for his second of the day. Curiously, that made him the first Newcastle player to score two headers in a Premier League game since Georginio Wijnaldum against Norwich in October 2015.
Dewsbury-Hall scored for the second game running to at least get Everton on the scoresheet, taking down a long pass with astonishing ease before producing a composed finish.
It was a mere consolation, however, as Newcastle saw out an emphatic first away win of the campaign.
