Volunteers across Rochester area give out free meals on Thanksgiving Day ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Volunteers across the area worked to ensure no one went hungry this Thanksgiving. From the Open Door Mission in Rochester to Harvest Christian Fellowship in Albion, many spent the holiday giving back to the community.

“When I volunteer, you’d think it’s to help other people, but it does good for your own self, your own soul,” a Harvest Church volunteer said.

At Harvest Christian Fellowship Church, volunteers understood that not everyone has a table to gather around on Thanksgiving, so they decided to spend the day there.

A whole family served food to ensure no one went hungry.

“This is my granddaughter Navah, my brother Bob, my husband Scott, and my daughter Bethany. And one of my besties Dee,” a volunteer said.

Faith and Mike Smith run the Orleans Koinonia Kitchen and serve meals every Thursday at the church. For Thanksgiving, they expected to feed more than 500 people.

“Most of it was donated by the entire community. We had 40 turkeys donated. We had all the supplies donated in threefold. We had everything to make Thanksgiving,” the Smiths said.

Members prepared for the past two weeks, cooking, roasting, baking, chopping, cutting, and serving on Thanksgiving.

“It makes me feel excited. Cause if I’m helping, that means everyone else gets to work a little less,” Joshua, a kid volunteering, said.

Back in Rochester, a similar story unfolded at the Open Door Mission, where volunteers were also hard at work serving Thanksgiving meals. Cesar Concepcion gave his time, and delivered food to those who needed it most.

“I’ve been seeing a lot of people out there suffering,” Concepcion said. “Unfortunately, they are unable to get to places because they are handicapped,” he added.

Concepcion, who has been helped by the Open Door Mission in the past, emphasized the importance of available resources.

“There are a lot of resources out here. There are programs that are willing to help,” he said.
