PENFIELD, N.Y. — As Thanksgiving approaches, the local community is stepping up to fight hunger and ensure families have meals for the holiday.
Wegmans in Penfield is partnering with Foodlink for the Check Out Hunger campaign. Proceeds from all 21 Rochester-area Wegmans stores will go to Foodlink to support families in need during the holidays and throughout the year.
“Our customers see how supportive and involved we are in our communities,” Store Manager Wendy Gallucci said. “So they are right here being generous with donating to such an important cause in our Rochester area.”
Foodlink staff are helping bag groceries and informing customers about the Check Out Hunger program. Foodlink COO and CFO Terra Keller said that around 150,000 people in the community face food insecurity, and donations at the register can make a difference.
“It’s a super easy and tangible way to support those in need, especially this time of year when people often think about the abundance and the food and family they have,” Keller said.
Last year, the campaign raised more than $700,000.
“These dollars are critical in ensuring we’re getting enough food out to our neighbors in need,” she said.
Meals on Wheels is also delivering food to those in need with the help of volunteers like Jill Dimino, who enjoys bringing meals to seniors.
“They’re also getting to talk to somebody, even if it’s only for a couple of minutes,” she said. “They’re getting to talk to somebody in somebody that understands.”
Volunteers and drivers are loaded their vehicles and sent out 1,800 meals Wednesday, providing extra meals as there will be no deliveries on Thursday or Friday.
“There’s nothing that’s more heartwarming than handing a person a meal that they’re waiting for,” Meals on Wheels Assistant Director Joe DelGrosso said. “And then also, you might often be their only social contact, so you might be the person that they see every day.”
