Ventura football runs over Agoura in Division 6 semifinals ...Middle East

AGOURA HILLS — The strong winds weren’t the only breeze going by the Agoura football team’s defensive line throughout the night.

Ventura’s run game (11-2, 5-0) blew through it, leading to a 28-14 win over Agoura (10-3, 5-0) to move on in the CIF-SS Division 6 championship game.

Despite the result, there was pride in the Agoura postgame huddle.

“I got here and inherited a team that was 1-9,” Agoura head coach Dustin Croick said. “I played for this program, and I just know how good this community is, and what great kids we have, and these kids have all just put the work in … I’m just proud, couldn’t be more real with them. And yeah, we fell short, and it is what it is, but we have a really good thing going here.”

It didn’t take long for the rushing attack of Ventura to make a statement in the game. Ventura’s James Watson ran for a 41-yard gain to quiet the ramped-up Agoura home crowd quickly.

Watson was benched in the second half after fumbling the ball three times. He finished the game with 118 rushing yards.

Ventura’s Tristan Savage finished with 132 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns. He took over in the fourth quarter after an Agoura touchdown cut the Ventura lead to 21-14. On the ensuing Ventura possession, Savage had seven carries for 74 yards and a score, effectively putting away Agoura for good.

“They’re well coached,” Croick said. “I tip my cap to them. I think they’re on one, they got a really good thing going on … I think Coach Garcia is a really good coach. He’s been doing this a long time. It’s a special thing they got going right now with his son and him, and all those kids.”

The single touchdown of the game for Agoura came from a two-yard pass from Gavin Gray to Anderson Mercer early in the fourth quarter, but overall, the offense was tough to come by for the Chargers. But one player was consistent throughout the night.

Luke Bussiere was the answer all night long for Agoura. The senior receiver finished with five catches for 60 yards and drilled two field goals as well. Outside of him, there wasn’t much consistency in the passing or rushing attack for Agoura.

“He’s been everything for us this year,” Croick said of Bussiere. “Like you talk about, Gavin [Gray], obviously, the statistics, everything this year, but Luke [Bussiere] was the true MVP to me, kicking, defense, and offense like he was heart and soul.”

Ventura moves on to play Roosevelt in the Division 6 championship game next week.
