One tip stood out to me the most, and that is that you should never use a power cord that is surge protected. This can cause issues with the ship’s electrical system–so much so that it could blow out the electrical sockets in your cabin.
Another issue with the surge protected power cords is that they generate heat, which poses a fire risk on cruise ships. As a crew member, I was always taught in safety training that fire is the number one risk onboard a cruise ship. Electricity doesn’t work how it works on land, and depending on many different factors, a fire could easily be started by things like surge protected power cords. I’ve even been shown pictures of cruise ship cabins completely melted because of this very issue–and it’s something that has stuck with me forever.

If you’re staying on a newer cruise ship, many have USB-C and USB ports next to the beds on the nightstands.
