Staying in a cruise ship cabin, especially on more modern ships, can feel exactly like staying in a hotel room. You may even forget you’re floating in the middle of the ocean until you open up your balcony or window and see the waves moving quickly on the horizon. The one big difference, however, is that there are various rules and things to be aware of when staying in a cruise ship cabin that aren’t necessarily important or valid when staying in a regular hotel room.
Since ships are basically floating cities without access to help on land, safety is very important. While you most likely attended a muster station drill when you embarked the ship or were sent a video to review before you set sail, some people may not realize certain things you can and cannot do on a cruise ship.

I’ve sailed on over 200 cruise voyages in my lifetime, and consider myself a cruise expert at this point. Many of these voyages were when I worked as a cruise ship entertainer for five years, and learned the ins and outs of living on a ship. I have also gone on main sailings as a guest, and it’s actually become my favorite way to see the world. With many experiences under my belt, I’ve learned exactly what you should and should never do in your cruise cabin.

Never Use A Surge-Protected Power Strip

One tip stood out to me the most, and that is that you should never use a power cord that is surge protected. This can cause issues with the ship’s electrical system–so much so that it could blow out the electrical sockets in your cabin.
Another issue with the surge protected power cords is that they generate heat, which poses a fire risk on cruise ships. As a crew member, I was always taught in safety training that fire is the number one risk onboard a cruise ship. Electricity doesn’t work how it works on land, and depending on many different factors, a fire could easily be started by things like surge protected power cords. I’ve even been shown pictures of cruise ship cabins completely melted because of this very issue–and it’s something that has stuck with me forever.

Many cruise lines have these items listed on their websites as a forbidden item, however small items like these could easily get past cruise security. It’s important to listen to the rules listed by your cruise line, and not to bring any of the forbidden items.

How To Safely Charge Your Items On A Cruise Ship
The reason that many people bring extension cords on cruise ships in the first place is because there aren’t that many electrical outlets in staterooms. Especially if you are staying with your family, access to charging your phone and other devices may be limited.
If you’re staying on a newer cruise ship, many have USB-C and USB ports next to the beds on the nightstands. This is useful to charge an iPhone or an android, or any other devices that don’t need a classic electrical plug. So, make sure to bring charging cords that allow you to plug straight into a USB-C or USB port versus a wall outlet.
If you need more plugs, there is still an option for an extension cord that is cruise safe. Go ahead on Amazon, and search “cruise safe extension cords.” Some cruise lines, like Carnival Cruise Line for example, allow extension cords that don’t have surge protectors–so these cords that you’ll find on Amazon will work. Be sure to check your specific cruise line’s website for what they allow and don’t allow, and you’ll be good to set sail.
