SAN DIEGO – Most trails at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve in La Jolla are closed through February for a phased improvement project to upgrade utilities, enhance accessibility, modernize the comfort station and make other site improvements.
All of these changes are aimed at creating a safer, more accessible experience for visitors, said Jorge Moreno, southern communication manager for California State Parks.
“The multi-phase construction project will provide much-needed water, sewer, electrical and telecommunication line improvements, upgrades to the restrooms and accessibility improvements, including new parking stalls and ADA pathways,” he said.
“The reserve’s South Beach and North Beach parking lots will remain open, as well as Torrey Pines State Beach. The park road, upper lots and most trails within the reserve will be closed.”
Moreno noted the park enhancement project was planned and received California Coastal Commission approval in July.
Construction began in early November after several preliminary steps were completed, including the competitive bid process, the contract award and issuance of the notice to proceed. Full access to the reserve is expected prior to March 1, 2026. Phase II of the project is then scheduled to follow in August or September 2026.
“We look forward to completing this project and are excited to bring these improvements to the park and its visitors,” Moreno said.
