I understood why Cairo Santos and Devin Duvernay received game balls from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson during his “Good, Better, Best” post-game locker room speech.
But I did not understand why cornerback Nahshon Wright didn’t get one.
It was an odd omission from the Bears head coach. But for what it’s worth, we gave Nahshon Wright some love on The BN Bears Podcast’s latest installment. And I think you can understand why.

Think about how far Nahshon Wright has come this season. Wright’s signing with the Bears during the offseason was mostly an afterthought. A depth piece whose connection to defensive assistant Al Harris from their time with the Dallas Cowboys helped bring in the free agent who could be a useful depth piece. But Wright’s role has evolved beyond being part of Chicago’s depth. Wright had a strong training camp, which led to him earning a starting spot while fellow cornerback Jaylon Johnson was dealing with injury issues. And while it hasn’t always been pretty following Wright in coverage, he has shown a knack for making plays in key moments.

Have you seen Nahshon Wright’s numbers this year? He has four interceptions in 10 games after having just one pick in 32 games before the start of the 2025 campaign. Wright also has eight passes defended this season. He had just five coming into this year. Wright has also snagged a pair of fumble recoveries, including a memorable one that led to the Bears’ come-from-behind win against the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football.
THE BEARS DEFENSE DID SOMETHING IT HASN’T DONE SINCE 1985
Given all of that background, to see Nahshon Wright come up with an interception of Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy (on what otherwise would’ve been a touchdown pass to Jordan Addison) in a homecoming game for a player who was released by Minnesota back in April should have been enough for some post-game recognition. Wright has two INTs in two games against his former team — including a pick-six. C’mon, now. He deserved a game ball!
What should have put Nahshon Wright over the top when it came to getting a game ball is that he was playing with a heavy heart. Wright’s college coach, John Beam, died on Friday after being shot on campus at Laney College in Oakland. Beam, 66, might be best known for his appearance on the Netflix “Last Chance U” documentary series.
An emotional Nahshon Wright let it all hang out while discussing things with the media after the Bears’ win at US Bank Stadium in Week 11:
Nahshon Wright reflected on the impact his late coach, John Beam, had on him ❤️Wright was emotional after his INT on Sunday. pic.twitter.com/MxpL4G2toO
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) November 16, 2025My heart aches so much right now. Beam is the most down to earth person I’ve ever meet when my father was shot and killed he came and knocked on my door and got me and my younger brother out of bed and the rest is history. I’m glad I was able to speak with you one last time… pic.twitter.com/Z5NziziKcV
— Nahshon Wright (@nahwrig) November 15, 2025More from The Athletic’s Dan Wiederer:
Then the significance landed. With such power. Wright, the Bears’ 27-year-old cornerback, was back up on his feet for only five steps before he reached the back of the end zone and dropped to his left knee.
He thought immediately of John Beam, his former coach at Laney College. One of his dearest mentors and friends. “He meant the world to me,” Wright said. “He was someone I loved dearly.”
…
That’s why that heavy reflection poured in Sunday in the end zone, with Wright giving his sadness a moment to breathe while taking his opportunity to pay tribute to his old coach.
“Today,” Wright said, “he was watching over me.”
I understand if Nahshon Wright not getting a game ball doesn’t register with everyone. But I’ll be darned if that story doesn’t tug at your heartstrings. I’m not sure what the futue holds for Wright, who could be knocked out of the starting lineup when Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon return. But it makes for a tremendous story to see a player to go from the bottom of the depth chart to making plays for a team that is currently in the playoff hunt.
