ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Families of road traffic victims gathered at Parcel Five in Rochester on Sunday to honor their loved ones during World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. The event, organized by Reconnect Rochester, provided a platform for families to share their stories.

140 pairs of shoes were displayed near the “I Love ROC” sign, symbolizing pedestrians and bicyclists killed in traffic collisions on Monroe County roads over the past decade. Yellow flags represented injuries, and buildings were lit in yellow to mark the occasion.

Glenn Sutton Sr. lost his son and nephew in a speed-related crash on Lake Avenue earlier this year.

“You need to just slow down you can’t get time back at the end of the day if you’re going to be late you’re going to be late,” Sutton said. “You can’t get time back. You can’t go back or in life and you can’t go forward so just take your time you’re going to get where you’re going to get when you get there there’s no rushing in life.”

Josie McClary became involved with Reconnect Rochester after her grandson’s best friend, Ryan Grantham, was killed in a crash on Thurston Road.

“I was very much involved in getting the crosswalk and the rapid beacon lights on Thurston Road and really became very intertwined with Reconnect Rochester and really wanted to advocate for safe streets in the city of Rochester,” McClary said. “Because if it can save one life then it’s all worth it.”

McClary emphasized the importance of adherence to safety measures.

“A lot of education still needs to happen,” McClary said. “People need to slow down because even with those rapid beacon lights, people are not yielding to them.”

Reconnect Rochester launched its updated Monroe County crash map, detailing crashes involving cyclists and pedestrians who were killed or injured.

“We see them every day in the news, but you know those of us who are not directly impacted, get to forget about it,” Cody Donahue, co-executive director of Reconnect Rochester said. “But those families can never forget about it and we just wanna offer some community. Some space for people to talk to each other make connections to support each other.”

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow reported that Reconnect Rochester is advocating for a 25 mph speed limit on all streets in the city and eligible towns and villages in Monroe County.
