Turnover issues cost Alabama the game against Oklahoma ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

The Crimson Tide handed the victory over to Oklahoma Saturday after the offense failed to move the ball effectively, allowing the Sooners to score 17 points off of three turnovers Saturday afternoon.

“What’s disappointing is the turnovers,” head coach Kalen DeBoer said. “We were working deep into their territory, intercepting for a touchdown, and then we just gave them the ball in our territory a couple of times there.”

Despite Alabama leading in yards with 406 total, nearly double what Oklahoma put up, and holding a 10-minute possession advantage, Alabama’s offense struggled to handle the ball. Oklahoma took advantage of that.

“We just shot ourselves in the foot,” quarterback Ty Simpson said. “We just got to do a better job at taking care of the ball.”

The first two turnovers came during the first quarter after Simpson threw a pick-6 and wide receiver Ryan Williams fumbled a punt return.

The third turnover came late in the third quarter with 0:50 left on the clock from a fumble by Simpson. The turnover allowed Oklahoma to put up 3 more points early in the fourth quarter and take the lead.

“When you turn the ball over three times, you really can’t expect a win in this league,” linebacker Deontae Lawson said.

Alabama’s defense also found itself out of luck in the turnover department and was unable to force any turnovers from Oklahoma during the game, despite coming into the game with a plus-10 turnover margin, the best in the SEC.

“I wouldn’t say it was our best game,” Lawson said. “We didn’t create any turnovers, and that’s what we pride ourselves on.”

Oklahoma, which came in with a -5 turnover margin, flipped the script on the Crimson Tide and force three turnovers while avoiding any turnovers. The turnover margin played a decisive part in its upset of the Crimson Tide.

“We’re just gonna get back to the practice field tomorrow. We’re gonna watch the film, and you know we just got to be better as a defense,” Lawson said. “It’s on us. It’s on us as players to bring the energy.”
