Roosevelt dominates Pueblo County in first round of football playoffs ...Saudi Arabia

JOHNSTOWN — The Roosevelt football team was happy to offer Pueblo County a couple different options Friday night at Randall Hess Stadium.

Unfortunately for the visiting Hornets, neither of those options was the option to pick up an upset win in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament.

Option 1: The battering ram-like Rough Riders could run it straight down the throat of the Pueblo County defense with bruising 6-foot, 190-pound senior Milo Pascual.

Option 2: Roosevelt could run around and past the Hornets defense with shifty, elusive 5-foot-10, 155-pound senior Ryder Tymkowych.

The unveiling of which option the Rough Riders would settle on any given play was ultimately the only intrigue sixth-seeded Roosevelt injected into the game.

The Rough Riders used their potent one-two punch to completely dominate 11th-seeded Pueblo County from beginning to end in a 47-0 onslaught.

“I’m more like the ‘punch-punch guy’ and (Tymkowych) is more of the juking guy,” Pascual said. “But, we’re great running backs. It’s the best duo in the state, I can promise you that.”

With the decisive victory, Roosevelt extended its well-timed win streak to five games.

The Rough Riders (8-3) will try to tack on another important win when they hit the road to take on third-seeded Palisade (8-2) or play host to No. 14 Timnath (6-4) in the second round next weekend.

The Bulldogs and Cubs clash in a first-round game at 1 p.m. Saturday in Palisade.

Regardless of the opponent, Roosevelt will enter next week’s second round with no shortage of confidence and momentum.

The Rough Riders’ swarming defense held Pueblo County (7-4) scoreless for the first time this season. The Hornets entered Friday night’s game averaging 37 points per game.

Roosevelt limited Pueblo County to just 47 net offensive yards. The Hornets, who came in averaging 276.7 rushing yards per game, were reduced to minus-19 rushing yards on 18 carries.

Meanwhile, the Rough Riders racked up 379 offensive yards, including 295 on the ground.

Pascual and Tymkowych accounted for 265 rushing yards.

Pascual had 180 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.

Tymkowych, always a threat to break off a big play, had 85 yards and a touchdown on just five carries.

And though Roosevelt kept Pueblo County’s overmatched defense on the edge of its seat all night, one thing was a bit more predictable.

The Rough Riders’ big, athletic offensive line assured Roosevelt’s deadly attack was moving forward all night, even with a mercy rule-mandated running clock for much of the second half.

“I love ’em, they’re the best,” Tymkowych said of his linemen. “They’re the best offensive line in the state. They do their thing. They always do their job.”
