After being rushed to Northwestern Memorial Wednesday night, the Rev. Jesse Jackson remains hospitalized for a rare neurological condition.
According to his son, former Congressman and current Congressional candidate Jesse Jackson Jr., doctors were able to give his father fluids and his condition has improved in the last 24 hours.
The 84-year-old civil right leader had been thought to have been battling Parkinson’s Disease for the better part of the last decade. Now, his Rainbow PUSH Coalition is reporting that he was diagnosed in April with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, or PSP, a rare condition related to Parkinson’s, that affects 1-in-50,000 people in the U.S.
According to Dr. Bezhad Elahi, a University of Chicago neurologist who is not treating Jackson, PSP has no known cure.
He said physical therapy and some of the same drugs that are used on Parkinson’s patients can also be used.
“PSP patients they don’t respond as well to Parkinson’s medications, but we try to give them medications to improve mobility and their quality of life,” he said.
PSP patients, Elahi said, often have trouble with their eye movements, speech and mobility. They often wind up needing a wheelchair within four to five years of their diagnosis. PSP patients also have problems with falls and balance disorders. That, he said, can reduce their life expectancy.
Jackson has only been seen in public occasionally in the past year. In November, he was unable to attend his 84th birthday party.
Tonight, Dr. Elahi said that by publicly revealing his diagnosis, Jackson was helping to raise awareness of the disease for other PSP sufferers.
Jackson’s family said in a statement that they appreciate all they prayers that have been offered on his behalf.
