Caleb Williams Ready for Another Chess Match with Brian Flores’ Defense ...Middle East

Caleb Williams still remembers how the Bears’ season against the Minnesota Vikings started with a surprise.

Williams expected Brian Flores’ trademark blitz-heavy attack. Instead, the Vikings defensive coordinator flipped the script.

“That’s why they get paid the big bucks over there, too,” Williams said during his weekly media availability on Wednesday at Halas Hall. “You expect them to do something when you’re going into a game plan and into a game. It’s kudos to them for being able to completely change it up.”

That Week 1 meeting became a lesson for Chicago’s quarterback — one about adaptability, communication, and problem-solving on the fly.

“It’s something that I think we’ve done better with since the first game of the year,” Williams said. “Adjusting throughout the game, adjusting and having answers. Just having open communication on the sideline to all be on the same page from players to players, player to coach.”

Flores, who’s earned a reputation for unpredictable defensive looks, continues to present one of the toughest challenges Williams has faced.

“He’s probably one of the more challenging coaches that I’ve had to go against so far in my career,” Williams said. “All 70-plus plays that you have or so, it’s full mental — every single play he’s challenging you to the full mental capacity that you can be at.”

That’s the kind of challenge Williams seems to embrace.

“It’s always a fun game going versus Flores, his defense, and all his players over there,” he said. “It’s always fun going versus a D coordinator and a team like this.”

The rookie acknowledged that facing a defense like Minnesota’s forces him to sharpen every detail of his preparation. “You just understand that you have to be as close to perfect as you can be,” he said. “Practice and the small details all matter — protecting the football, the routes, the depth, the spacing, my timing — everything matters.”

That commitment to precision has shown up in his ability to limit sacks and process faster.

“Part of it is the guys I’ve got up front; they’ve been awesome for me,” Williams said. “Then the other half of it is coach’s emphasis on me getting the ball out. When it’s time to go make a play, make the plays; when it’s time to throw it away, throw it away.”

Still, Williams knows the fine line between patience and decisiveness is something he’s still learning to balance.

“Sometimes I get through my reads actually too fast,” he said. “There was a play that I actually avoided a sack, but I could’ve thrown a touchdown. Finding the balance is tough, but that’s what we’re searching for.”

His feel for pressure continues to evolve, too. “I don’t know, maybe a sixth sense kind of thing,” he said. “In the moment, I just feel a little color or maybe feel the tackle or something getting edged and just try and get out of it, make a play.”

Williams’ mobility has quietly become an important part of Chicago’s offense, though he insists it’s about reacting, not forcing it.

“It’s been on my mind to be able to help the team in any way possible,” he said. “There are sometimes where a play needs to be made, or a spark needs to happen. Whatever comes available first — whether it’s a run or whether it’s a pass — I feel that I’m there to help out and try to help the team win.”

But for all the progress, Williams said he wants the Bears’ offense to maintain its late-game urgency from start to finish.

“We can score fast, we can march down and score in 13-play drives,” he said. “We just have to be efficient instead of having some three-and-outs. We have some special talent on our side of the ball… we just need to be better overall.”

That urgency comes into focus late in games, when Williams feels his best.

“You go into the fight or flight mode and you just start flying,” he said. “You have to go do it. You go into the survival mode… we have to win a ball game, and here we go.”

Williams also takes pride in simply being available for those moments.

“It’s one of the most important things to being an athlete — actually being able to be out there,” he said. “I take a lot of pride in recovery so that I can be ready for my guys. The best ability is availability.”

With Sunday’s rematch against the Vikings on deck, Williams sounded as steady and self-aware as ever. The first meeting with Flores was a crash course. The second? A midseason exam. And the Bears’ rookie quarterback seems ready for whatever answers it requires.
