NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Wants to See the NFL in Japan ...Middle East

If the World Cup has you thinking about football on a global stage, just know that you are not alone.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s plans for world domination aimed at extending the league’s reach to global markets show no sign of ending. So it didn’t surprise me at all to see this CBS Sports news story about the league’s commissioner sharing his desire to play a game in Japan and “about 10” other countries that could serve as hosts for NFL action.

“Not one, I’ve got about 10,” said Goodell when replying to a question about what international market he wants to see an NFL game in that hasn’t already done so. “We had a game in Tokyo, but it was a preseason game. So we want to see a regular-season game. We’ve got a lot of markets.”

Roger Goodell Wants to See the NFL in Japan — Do You?

On the one hand, I want to see the NFL continue its international push. Growing the game into new markets is good. Sure, the league is foisting it on us because it knows that more fans mean more money coming into their pockets. This league has constantly shown that its desire to squeeze every possible dollar from the paying customer has no limits. But for me, growing the game in new international markets is an opportunity for us to have more unique shared experiences — which is one of the best things about fandom.

But on the other hand, I know that more international games will lead to fewer games on the home front. And when the NFL is simultaneously pushing for more international games while asking cities and states to pony up billions of taxpayer dollars to subsidize stadium projects, it just doesn’t vibe with me. How can you justify asking for more money for new stadiums when you know you’re going to be taking home games away from the teams and markets that are building those stadiums?

18 THOUGHTS ON THE BEARS’ 2026 SCHEDULE

In the end, I find myself torn. I like the idea of the NFL going abroad because I like to travel and would love to watch the Bears play ball in a part of the world that I haven’t visited before. But more than that, I love a noon kick-off on a Sunday at Soldier Field because that is what I grew up with during my formative years as a fan. I’ll be curious to see what Roger Goodell has up his sleeve.
